Henry Clay (1777-1852)
An Introduction
Text by Thomas Rush He was one of the most partisan, hot-headed, and polarizing politicians of his day. Yet he was also a statesman possessing an unsurpassed ability for brokering differences, for finding the middle ground, for soothing and consoling opposing passions into compromise and reconciliation. At one point in his career he was dubbed "The Dictator" by some of his Senate colleagues. But this political gut-fighter's most lasting fame and greatest contribution to his country was achieved in the role of "The Great Pacificator," the man who held together the Union. Henry Clay failed in his all consuming ambition to become President of the United States. "I would rather be right than President," was his most famous remark, and probably one of the greatest utterances of political sour grapes of all time. Yet in failing in his fondest goal he became perhaps the foremost legislator America ever produced. He served as Speaker of the House longer than any man in the 19th Century, transforming the office from a mere presiding function into one of enormous power and influence. In 1957 a Senate committee, head by John F. Kennedy

Eulogy on Henry Clay
July 6, 1852
Springfield, Illinois
Henry Clay, the Kentucky politician whom Lincoln called his "beau ideal of a statesman," died on June 29, 1852. The same day, Lincoln appointed a committee in Springfield, Illinois, to arrange a public tribute. On July 6 while stores were closed and business was suspended, the Rev. Charles Dresser read the service for the dead at the Episcopal church. The procession continued to the statehouse, where Lincoln delivered this eulogy in the Hall of Representatives. The eulogy emphasizes Clay's devotion to liberty and praises him as a man "the times have demanded." In an ironic twist, Lincoln concludes, "Let us strive to deserve, as far as mortals may, the continued care of Divine Providence, trusting that in future emergencies, He will not fail to provide us the instruments of safety and security." The day after his death, one of the public Journals, opposed to him politically, held the following pathetic and beautiful language, which I adopt, partly because such high and exclusive eulogy, originating with a political friend, might offend good taste, but chiefly, because I could not, in any language of my own, so well express my thoughts "When Greece rose against the Turks and struck for liberty, his name was mingled with the battle-cry of freedom. When South America threw off the thraldom of Spain, his speeches were read at the head of her armies by Bolivar. His name has been, and will continue to be, hallowed in two hemispheres, for it is

Clay, Henry,
byname THE GREAT PACIFICATOR, or THE GREAT COMPROMISER (b. April 12, 1777, Hanover county, Va., U.S.d. June 29, 1852, Washington, D.C.), American statesman, U.S. congressman (1811-14, 1815-21, 1823-25) and U.S. senator (1806-07, 1810-11, 1831-42, 1849-52), who was a major promoter of the Missouri Compromise (1820), the compromise tariff of 1833 (ending the Nullification crisis), and the Compromise of 1850, all efforts to balance the rights of free and slave states. Clay was twice the unsuccessful Whig candidate for president (1832, 1844). Born of moderately well-to-do parents, young Clay studied law under Chancellor George Wythe and was admitted to the Virginia bar in November 1797. He then moved to Lexington, Ky., a rising western community and a paradise for lawyers because of interminable lawsuits over land titles that were contested there. Endowed with great vitality, a ready but not profound intellect, and a gift for eloquent oratory, he was quick-witted and self-confident. Sociable, charming, and high-spirited, he loved to drink and gamble, qualities not distasteful to most of his contemporaries in Kentucky society. He was also hot-tempered, sensitive, and extremely ambitious. Clay was spectacularly successful at the Kentucky bar in both civil and criminal cases, and he never lacked for clients. He acted as counsel for Aaron

Clay Henry III is the Mayor of Lajitas. The previous mayor was Clay Henry II (no relation). Clay Henry I did run for the office but was never major. He was defeated by David Tinsley in a 12,000 to 1 landslide that set the town of 200 reeling. The popularity of the Clay Henries is attributed to the ability to take a longneck beer, drink it dry, and toss it aside. "Claytie" charms visitors with this feat several times a day. There is an offspring, Clay Henry IV, who may be the sole heir to the mayorship due to the November 27, 2001 incident in which a vandal removed Clay Henry III's ability to reproduce. Lajitas constable Richard Hill retrieved the evidence from a dumpster and the vandal was identified. Allegedly, the perpetrator became upset when beer that he had purchased was given to the mayor. You can find Clay Henry III in his office next to the trading post in Lajitas, Texas.
