students benefited from donated classroom supplies Printer Friendly Version Plant A Thousand Gardens Collaborative Nutrition Initiative PLANTING THE SEEDS FOR A LIFETIME OF HEALTHY EATING Simply put, the urgency to educate children on their bodies has become as critical as improving their minds.  The Plant A Thousand Gardens Collaborative Nutrition Initiative (CNI) took root in five M-DCPS elementary schools in 2007 to address academic achievement while confronting the obesity epidemic that afflicts one of three American children. The program uses edible gardens as outdoor learning laboratories to instill in children the desire to eat vegetables, the knowledge to reduce intake of unhealthy foods and the love of learning in all subjects. Based around the hands-on planting and harvesting of edible vegetable and herb gardens, students become enthusiastic participants in an interdisciplinary experience that combines the teaching of nutrition with learning in science, math, art, reading and writing. Meanwhile, parents work in the gardens, contribute recipes and attend workshops, where they learn ways to cook healthy. The initiative engages students, over the course of the school year, to plant and maintain vegetable and herb gardens on school grounds while using those gardens to educate about healthy eating and nutrition. Organizers hope the two-year study will nurture more than tomatoes and carrots, as parents will be engaged throughout the entire process, community gardeners and health advocates will be invited to participate, and school leaders will share their results as a blueprint for future nutritional literacy.

The first To know or not to know: the politics of information, revealed that despite the proliferation of office technology, we were still a race of information misers. The second: Information as an asset: the invisible goldmine, showed how companies failed to realise the value of their information. In October 1996, Reuters conducted the first ever study into Information Overload, called Dying for information, which revealed the significant extent to which overload is becoming a problem in the information age. This paper examines the findings and implications of this research. DYING FOR INFORMATION: BACKGROUND The Dying for information study launched by Reuters in October 1996 was undertaken principally for the business world. Reuters produces 27,000 pages of information per second. Many users who depend upon information do not consider themselves to be information specialists, for example sales managers and marketing people. The most complex use of information which they may make is accessing a database via a graphical Web interface. Talking to these users about information problems is not unlike trying to sell a spreadsheet to someone who does not want to add up. They cannot perceive the need for an information service on their desk or why it should be managed. They see information as problem, but see it as something which should be dealt with by others. However, once overload is accepted as a problem, people are motivated to find a solution.

Dublin, Ohio, USA The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. are organizing an invitational workshop to promote convergence among alternative approaches to describing images and image databases in networked environments. Professionals from computer science, librarianship, online information services, geographical information systems, museum and archive control, medical imaging, and other fields have been convened to address the description of networked image resources. The objective is to promote standards and protocols for the description, organization and discovery of networked images and image databasebase resources. This workshop will build upon the outcomes of two previous metadata workshops: the OCLC/NCSA Metadata Workshop, held at Dublin, Ohio, in March, 1995, and the OCLC/UKOLN Metadata Workshop held at the University of Warkwick, United Kingdom, in April, 1996. David Brin It is an honor to be invited to speak before such a distinguished gathering of champions for literacy. I have been asked, before beginning my own remarks, to comment on some of the statements made by my fellow speakers. First off, I am glad that Bruce Sterling and I agree about Benjamin Franklin, one of my principal heroes. My wife and I named our newborn son after him. Ben Franklin's life story is a lesson in humility for those of us with ambitions to grasp the culture around us. That culture is now much too vast and complicated for one person to encompass, or even adequately sample. Even in Franklin's day, it was already too complex for anyone but a great genius to span. He was the last person, I believe, who read all the great books of his time, had deep conversations with all of the great minds, and dated all the interesting women. It's too late now, even for a genius. Our culture is simply too enormous. Bruce also brought to mind something Garrett Hardin wrote about in his book
