Internet2 IDEA Awards Call for Nominations February 11, 2010 Nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Award. IDEA Award winners are establishing new frontiers in the application of networking technology, and are considered role models for the entire research and education networking community. The judging committee, made up of representatives from Internet2 councils and working groups, expects an especially strong pool of applicants this year. Open to established or new applications, the IDEA Award was created in 2006 to recognize and encourage innovative applications of advanced network technology that have made-or promise to make-the most significant impact on the research and education community. The award also presents an important opportunity for the Internet2 community to recognize members who are changing the way we think about the possibilities and uses of advanced networking. 2010 IDEA Award winners will be recognized at the Internet2 Spring 2010 Member Meeting, held in Arlington, Virginia, April 26-28, 2010 and will be provided a track session during the meeting to present information on or demonstrate their winning projects to attendees.

Main April 15, 2010 Coalition for Networked Information Spring 2010 meeting I attended, along with Marcia Adams, the spring meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) in Baltimore. Also attending were staff from the Smithsonian’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). CNI holds both a spring and fall meeting. One of the great things about CNI is that it brings together library staff and staff from information technology (IT) departments from some of the world’s largest research institutions. Major topics at this meeting were open access to scholarly output; the role of institutional repositories; the increasing importance of data sets in the research environment (and the difficulties of handling them from both the library and IT perspective). I found the report on the “Faculty Attitudes 2009: Findings from the Latest Ithaka S+R Survey” particularly interesting; this report, which focuses on university faculty attitudes towards libraries is a must read. The ATHENS access management system was introduced in 1996 and then extended in 1997 to provide access control facilities for all the national data centres and services in the United Kingdom. The service, though relatively sophisticated, is not as technologically advanced as that proposed in the CNI infrastructure. It operates on a smaller scale than envisaged by Clifford. It has, so far, only involved a small number of agencies outside the education sector; and it has been promoted by a central coordinating body with some influence in the sector. Even so, it has been and remains a major challenge to persuade the stakeholders in the institutions to accept the additional work that has come about through its introduction. The problems of implementing a security infrastructure have always been seen as a technological challenge. The lessons from ATHENS could suggest that success will only be achieved if at least equal attention is paid to the needs of those who will have to manage the final system as to the technical detail.
