Description
One of the major figures of English Romanticism, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) created works of remarkable diversity and imaginative genius. The period of his creative friendship with William Wordsworth inspired some of Coleridge's best-known poems, from the nightmarish vision of the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and the opium-inspired "Kubla Khan" to the sombre passion of "Dejection: An Ode" and the medieval ballad "Christabel". His meditative 'conversation' poems, such as "Frost at Midnight" and "This Lime-Tree Bower Mr Prison", reflect on remembrance and solitude, while late works, such as "Youth and Age" and "Constancy to an Ideal Object", are haunting meditations on mortality and lost love.

Coleridge, Samuel Taylor
British, 1772–1834
Of the 16 volumes comprising Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s collected works, 15 consist of prose discourse. If we add to this corpus eight volumes of letters, four volumes of notes (published thus far), not to mention a considerable amount of manuscript material in collections at the British Museum and at the University of Toronto, we find that Coleridge was a prolific, interdisciplinary prose writer. This brings us to the difficult question: aside from better-known pieces (e.g. “On the Prometheus of Aeschylus,” 1825;
“On the Principles of Genial Criticism,” 1814), what parts of this enormous bulk of material qualify as discrete essays?
The OED defines an essay as “A composition of moderate length on any particular subject, or branch of a subject originally implying want of finish…but now said of a composition more or less elaborate in style, though limited in range.” We need only consult Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language (1755) to see that, by the middle of the 18th century, the essay was an endeavor considered lacking in “finish.” The authorities Johnson cites agree that the essay is little more than an early draft: “(Smith). A Loose sally of the mind; an irregular indigested piece. (Bacon). A trial; an experiment.

Troubled years.
Early in 1798 Coleridge had again found himself preoccupied with political issues. The French Revolutionary government had suppressed the states of the Swiss Confederation, and Coleridge expressed his bitterness at this betrayal of the principles of the Revolution in a poem entitled "France: An Ode." At this time the brothers Josiah and Thomas Wedgwood, who were impressed by Coleridge's intelligence and promise, offered him in 1798 an annuity of On his return to England, the tensions of his marriage were exacerbated when he fell in love with Sara Hutchinson, the sister of Wordsworth's future wife, at the end of 1799. His devotion to the Wordsworths in general did little to help matters, and for some years afterward Coleridge was troubled by domestic strife, accompanied by the worsening of his health and by his increasing dependence on opium. His main literary achievements during the period included another section of "Christabel." In 1802 Coleridge's domestic unhappiness gave rise to "Dejection : An Ode," originally a longer verse letter sent to Sara Hutchinson in which he lamented the corrosive effect of his intellectual activities when undertaken as a refuge from the lovelessness of his family life. The poem employs the technique of his conversational poems; the sensitive rhythms and phrasing that he had learned to use in them are here masterfully deployed to represent his own depressed state of mind.
