Collodi was born in Florence During the Wars of Independence in 1848 and 1860 Collodi served as a volunteer with the Tuscan army. His active interest in political matters may be seen in his earliest literary works as well as in the founding of the satirical newspaper Il Lampione . This newspaper was censored by order of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1849 but re-emerged in May 1860. Lorenzini had won fame as early as 1856 with his novel In vapore and had also begun intense activity on other political newspapers such as Il Fanfulla ; at the same time he was employed by the Censorship Commission for the Theatre. Carlo Collodi (1826-1890) - pseudonym for Carlo Lorenzini Italian author and journalist, best-known as the creator of Pinocchio, the wooden boy puppet who came to life. His nose grew larger when he told a lie and returned to normal size when he told the truth. The story has inspired many film makers, among them Walt Disney, whose animation from 1943 is well known. The Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce remarked that "the wood out of which Pinocchio is carved is humanity itself". "C'era una volta...

Carlo Collodi [pseudonym of Carlo Lorenzini] (1826-1890) , Italian journalist and author wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio , first serialised in Il giornale per i bambini (The Children's Magazine) as Le avventure di Pinocchio After several months of the series' well received publication, Pinocchio was left for dead hanging from the branch of an oak tree by two robbers. There was such an outpouring of grief and demand for a continuation that Collodi acquiesced. The novel Pinocchio became a best-seller, the adventures of the now iconic puppet-boy appealing universally to children from all over North America, Europe, and numerous other countries. He inspired many movie producers to adapt him to the big screen including Walt Disney. Created by his poor woodcarver father Geppetto, Pinocchio is a mischievous boy who's nose grows if he tells a lie. At times dark and comical, with allegory to the socio-political times in Italy, Jiminy Cricket and The Blue Fairy accompany him as he redeems himself to become a "real" boy whilst learning the moral of the story. "Collodi" was the name chosen by Lorenzini for his pseudonym after the hillside village in Tuscany, birthplace of his mother. It now boasts the Park of Pinocchio, setting for many tourists and local admirers alike. Carlo Collodi was born in Florence, Italy on 24 November 1826. His writing career started with the publication of reviews submitted to various journals including

Carlo Collodi
Carlo Collodi was born Carlo Lorenzini in Florence as the son of Domingo Lorenzini, a cook, and Angela Orzali, a servant. While he joined a seminary as a young man, Collodi found politics more interesting, when the movement for Italian national unification spread. At the age of twenty-two, he became a journalist that worked for the Italian independence struggle. In 1848 he founded the satirical journal Il Lampione , which was suppressed in 1849. His next periodical, La Scaramuccia , was more fortunate, and in 1860 he revived Il Lampione again. Collodi also wrote comedies and edited newspapers and reviews. He took the pseudonym 'Collodi' from the name of the town where his mother was born. In 1861, when Italy became a united nation, Collodi gave up journalism. After 1870 he settled down as a theatrical censor and magazine editor. He turned soon to children's fantasy, translating Italian versions of the fairy tales of the French writer Charles Perrault's. It was Perrault who reintroduced such half-forgotten tales as 'Little Red Riding Hood 'Sleeping Beauty ,’ and 'Puss in Boots .’ Collodi also began to write his own children's stories, including a series about a character named Giannettino. The first chapter of
