Confucius

Chinese Philosopher and Teacher
by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
A traveling teacher, a wise sage, the ideal man-such was the conception of Confucius developed by his admirers after his death. During his life, however, it did not seem as though Confucius would attain the high status eventually bestowed upon him. Who would have guessed that this poor vagabond who had failed as a statesman would eventually be called the most influential man in the history of China? Yet his life and teaching would affect the social and political fabric of the Asian world for centuries to come. Born in 551 B.C. in the Chinese province of Lu, Confucius had a difficult childhood. Although his father belonged to the nobility and was renowned as a warrior, the family had struck hard times, and Confucius spent his childhood in poverty. When Confucius was only three years old, his father died. In order to support his family, Confucius was forced to take a job as a hired servant when he was still very young. Despite his family's poverty, however, he still managed to get an education, which started him on the path toward a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

Confucius

Confucius Analects . The Confucian method characterizes just about all Chinese learning down to the present day; its fundamental tenet is the unwavering belief in the perfectibility of human beings through learning.
Chinese Glossary Jen Confucius had one overwhelming message: if we are to achieve a state of orderliness and peace, we need to return to traditional values of virtue. These values are based entirely on one concept: jen which is best translated as "humaneness," but can also mean "humanity," "benevolence," "goodness," or "virtue." This humaneness is a relatively strange concept to Western eyes, because it is not primarily a practicable virtue. Rather, the job of the "gentleman," , was to concentrate on the highest concepts of behavior even when this is impractical or foolish. Like his contemporaries, Confucius believed that the human order in some way reflected the divine order, or the patterns of heaven. More than anything, according to Confucius, the ancients understood the order and hierarchy of heaven and earth; as a result, Confucius established the Chinese past as an infallible model for the present.
What is incumbent on individual people is to determine the right pattern to live and govern by; this can be achieved by studying the sage-kings and their mode of life and government and by following rituals scrupulously, for the pattern of heaven is most explicitly inscribed on the various rituals

What Confucius Thought
by Megaera Lorenz
Confucius, since he lived in a war-torn society, was largely concerned with improving government and society. He was convinced that the problem with government and society was a lack of virtue. There were not enough government workers of the ideal kind that Confucius's pupil Zizhang described: A public servant who on confronting danger is prepared to lay down his life, who on confronting gain
concentrates on what is right, who when sacrificing concentrates on reverence, who when mourning concentrates
on grief should definitely be all right. (19:1, Analects This description covers most of the qualities Confucius considered virtuous: sincerity and a willingness to learn, minimal desire for material things, and loyalty. Other factors important in being virtuous included self cultivation, filial piety, extensive knowledge of ritual and poetry, humility, and a good grasp on how to conduct oneself when dealing with other people. Confucius also thought that how you go about trying to achieve something is more important than actually achieving it.
Confucius believed that, because the rulers at his time were not virtuous, they did not please the common people (another important requirement for good government), and incited attacks on themselves from the other warring states. He pointed to the actions of successful historical figures as examples of good and virtuous behavior.

Confucius
Philosopher Born: 551 B.C. Died: 479 B.C. Birthplace: Lu, China (now Shandong province) Best known as: Chinese sage Also Known As: Kong Fu-Zi Confucius was a teacher, scholar and minor political official whose commentary on Chinese literary classics developed into a pragmatic philosophy for daily life. Not strictly religious, the teachings of Confucius were a utilitarian approach to social harmony and defined moral obligations between individuals and social systems. After his death his pupils collected notes on his sayings and doings and recorded them as the Analects . This compilation was added to over the years, and many sayings attributed to him are probably only loosely based on his teachings. His approach was formalized into a political and religious system during the Han Dynasty in the early part of the third century. It was embraced by subsequent generations and was the "state religion" of China until the latter part of the 20th century. In recent years critics have condemned Confucianism, characterizing its reliance on tradition as an impediment to modernization. Extra credit: "Confucius" is the Latin rendering of his Chinese name, Kong Fu-Zi, which is sometimes also spelled as Kung Fu-Zi, K'ung-fu-tze, or in other variations. The name is unrelated to the martial art known as kung fu.

Over the several decades in which Confucius taught it is very difficult to estimate how many students he had. Unlike the Buddha and Jesus, there is no indication that he ever spoke to large groups of people. In The Analects there are the names of about twenty men who might have been regular students or disciples. The character of all these discussions is of personal conversations among a few individuals. None of Confucius' personal students became famous philosophers or religious leaders, though Confucianism was eventually to become a dominant philosophy and even a religion. However, some of the disciples did write down the conversations they remembered, preserving and passing on the teachings of their master. The authorship of The Analects is unknown, and the later Confucian texts of Higher Education (The Great Learning) and The Center of Harmony (The Doctrine of the Mean) , although attributed to Confucius' grandson Zisi, may have been written a couple of
