Confucianism, Confucius
General Information Confucianism, the philosophical system founded on the teaching of Confucius (551 - 479 BC), dominated Chinese sociopolitical life for most of Chinese history and largely influenced the cultures of Korea, Japan, and Indochina. The Confucian school functioned as a recruiting ground for government positions, which were filled by those scoring highest on examinations in the Confucian classics. It also blended with popular and imported religions and became the vehicle for articulating Chinese mores to the peasants. The school's doctrines supported political authority using the theory of the mandate of heaven. It sought to help the rulers maintain domestic order, preserve tradition, and maintain a constant standard of living for the taxpaying peasants. It trained its adherents in benevolence, traditional rituals, filial piety, loyalty, respect for superiors and for the aged, and principled flexibility in advising rulers. BELIEVE

The Chinese philosopher and social reformer, Kong Zi, (Wade-Giles - K'ung-fu-tzu; or Pinyin - Kongfuzi; see also - Kong Qiu), or Master K'ung, is best known by the Latin form of his name, Confucius, which was bestowed by Jesuit missionaries centuries after his death. Confucius was apparently born about 551 BC in the Watch Tower (Queli) district of Qufu, then the capital of the state of Lu of the Zhou kingdom. He is believed to have worked as a minor civil servant and teacher under the Zhou Dynasty. The tradition he left was not originally intended as a philosophical learning, as much as a "Way of the Gentleman", and in Chinese "Confucianism" is better rendered as "The School of the learned". Confuciansim itself is a system of honour codes and moral assumptions for the educated upper classes of Chinese society, principally formed by Confucius, Mencius (Mengzi), and Xunzi.

It was later writers, such as Sima Tan, Sima Qian, and Liu Xiang, who distilled philosophical elements from the Confucian writings. A large number of different schools of thought emerged from the study of such texts in relation to the Confucian canon.

Confucius was born around 551 BCE in Lu province in Chou (Zhou) times. His parents were nobility, but had become poor when the empire disintegrated into feudal states. When Confucius was about 15 years old, he became quite interested in learning. In those days, only the nobility and royals were allowed education. All the teachers were government officials. It was hard for Confucius to find a way to learn. He couldn't go to the public library or go to public school. These things did not yet exist in ancient China. To solve this, he went to work for a nobleman. This gave him the opportunity to learn and to travel to the imperial capital. Confucius studied and learned until he probably was the most learned man of his day. People heard of his knowledge and sent their sons to study with him. He was the first private teacher in China. Confucius taught anyone who was eager to learn. His ideas, called Confucianism, stress the need to develop responsibility and moral character through rigid rules of behavior. Confucianism is not, properly speaking, a religion

Article by Pat Zukeran
The Life of Confucius
Of all eastern philosophers, Confucius, born in 550 B.C., is considered the greatest. His teachings are foundational to Asian cultures. His writings, The Five Classics, the collection of ancient Chinese literature, and The Four Books , a collection of Confucius' and his disciple's teachings, was for centuries the standard curriculum for Chinese education. Confucius' teachings and biography were written many years after his death and were edited by his disciples. Although historians present various accounts of his life, there are some basic facts that we are reasonably sure of, and from which we can outline the major events of his life. Confucius was born in the province of Lu, in northern China. He was born into a family of humble circumstance, and his father died at a young age. He began studying under the village tutor and at the age of fifteen he devoted his life to study. At twenty, he married but soon divorced his wife and had an aloof relationship with his son and daughter. In his twenties, he became a teacher and gathered a group of loyal disciples. Confucius lived during the Chou Dynasty (1100 B.C. to 256 B.C.). At this time, the land was divided among feudal lords. The moral and social order was in a state of decay. Confucius sought a way to restore the cultural-political order. He believed that reform would come through educating the leaders in the classics and in his philosophy. He therefore sought a political position of influence, from which he could implement his principles.

CONFUCIANISM Confucius, the Latinized form of the name of Kung Fu-tzu, was bom in 551 B.C. and died in 479 B.C. The philosophy that is known as Confucianism comes mainly from the speeches and writings of Confucius. Disciples (followers) of Confucius, such as Mencius, made important contributions to Confucianism as well. The ideas of Confucianism are found in nine works: the "Four Books" and the "Five Classics." Confucianism is an ethical system rather than a religion. (Ethics deals with human behavior and conduct.) Confucius was mainly concerned with how human beings behaved toward each other and paid little attention to such matters as sin, salvation, and the soul. He developed a system of government, society, and justice which we call Confucianism. Confucius believed that people, because of their nature, desire to live in the company of other people, that is, in society. It is only in society that people reach their fullest development. Therefore, it is important for people to know how to behave in society, that is, in their relations with other people. The Five Basic Relationships
According to Confucius, each person had a specific place in society and certain duties to fulfill. Confucius hoped that if people knew what was expected of them they would behave correctly. Therefore, he set up five principal relationships in which most people are involved. These relationships were (1) ruler and subject; (2) father and son; (3) elder brother and younger brother; (4) husband and wife; and (5) friend and friend. All, except the last, involve the authority of one person over another. Power and the right to rule belong to superiors over subordinates; that is, to older people over younger people, to men over women. Each person has to give obedience and respect to "superiors"; the subject to his ruler, the wife to her husband, the son to his parents, and the younger brother to the older brother. The "superior," however, owes loving responsibility to the inferior.

FAST-US-7 United States Popular Culture (Hopkins)

The "Confucius Say, ..." joke (the "Confucious" spelling is also common) is an example of standard-format culture-bound folk-humor. Along with Knock-Knock Jokes they are among the most common examples of juvenile English-language word-play humor. Confucius (also spelled "Confucious", etc.) jokes are always one-liners beginning with the phrase "Confucius Say, ..." [note the non-grammatical format, perhaps indicating an original anti-Chinese intent (cf Rationale of the Dirty Joke )]. Confucius jokes originally centered on a "folk truth," in ways not unlike urban folklore like The Hook . They almost always have a scatological element, ranging from mildly to extremely vulgar. They always include a punning or double-meaning of words or language phrases, particularly colloquial folk-register phrases such as by cracky, to be in the doghouse, to get caught red-handed, to feel low-down , or something which is not on the level , etc.; double-meanings of homonyms such as
