Infidels, Freethinkers, Humanists, and Unbelievers Conway, Moncure Daniel (1832-1907) "That cry could never be wrung from the lips of a man who saw in his own death a prearranged plan for the world's salvation, and his own return to divine glory temporarily renounced for transient misery on earth. The fictitious theology of a thousand years shrivels beneath the awful anguish of that cry." Dr. Daniel Conway
Moncure Daniel Conway was an American clergyman and author. He was born of an old Virginia family in Stafford County, Virginia. His father was a wealthy gentleman farmer, a slaveholder, and county judge whose home still stands in Falmouth, Virginia along the Rappahannock River. Conway's mother was a homemaker and homeopathic physician. Both parents were Methodists, his father having left the Episcopal church, his mother the Presbyterian. Moncure's opposition to slavery came from his mother and from his boyhood experiences. His father and three brothers remained staunchly pro-slavery. He graduated at Dickinson College in 1849, studied law for a year, and then became a Methodist minister in his native state. In 1852, thanks largely to the influence of

Demonology and Devil Lore, Volume 2 (New)
by Conway, Moncure Daniel Publisher: Kessinger Publishing Binding: Paperback Book ID: Usually available in 1-2 weeks
Description
Volume 2 of 2. The natural world is overlaid by an unnatural religion, breeding bitterness around simplest thoughts, obstructions to science, estrangements not more reasonable than if they resulted from varying notions of lunar figures, all derived from the Devil-bequeathed dogma that certain beliefs and disbeliefs are of infernal instigation. Dogmas molded in a fossil demonology make the foundation of institutions which divert wealth, learning, enterprise, to fictitious ends. It was not, therefore, mere intellectual curiosity which kept Mr. Conway working at this subject for many years, but an increasing conviction that the sequelae of such superstitions were exercising a formidable influence. If everyone busied himself with the Devil as Mr. Conway did, the kingdom of God would gain by it. It was with this sentiment in mind that Mr. Conway presents this work to the public. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read. Singing to the Plants: A Guide to Mestizo Shamanism in the Upper Amazon

38. Gargoyle Definition, Picture, And More
Conway, Moncure Daniel. Demonology and Devillore, Volume 1. New York Henry Holt and Company, 1881. William Andrews. Antiquities and Curiosities of the Church.
http://www.lizaphoenix.com/encyclopedia/gargoyle.shtml
Gargoyle A gargoyle is a water spout carved in the shape of a grotesque or fantastic animal. They commonly adorn medieval churches and are said to ward off evil that would enter there. They represent demons fleeing from inside the church and then becoming frozen in stone and forced to protect the building that they first tried to destroy. They both protect the building from water damage and pose as a warning to other demons. They are also said to represent earlier deities, whose forms were distorted by the Church. Paine, Thomas
Paine, Thomas, Franklin , who was then in England. He soon became involved in the clashes between England and the American colonies and published the stirring and enormously successful pamphlet Common Sense (Jan., 1776), in which he argued that the colonies had outgrown any need for English domination and should be given independence. In Dec., 1776, Paine wrote the first of a series of 16 pamphlets called The American Crisis American Revolution . He also wrote essays for the Pennsylvania Journal and edited the Pennsylvania Magazine. After the war he returned to his farm in New Rochelle, N.Y. In 1787 Paine went to England and while there wrote The Rights of Man (2 parts, 1791 and 1792), defending the French Revolution in reply to Edmund Burke 's Reflections on the Revolution in France. Its basic premises were that there are natural rights common to all men, that only democratic institutions are able to guarantee these rights, and that only a kind of welfare state can secure economic equity. Paine's attack on English institutions led to his prosecution for treason and subsequent flight to Paris (1792). There, as a member of the National Convention, he took a significant part in French affairs. During the Reign of Terror he was imprisoned by the Jacobins from Dec., 1793 to Nov., 1794 and narrowly escaped the guillotine. During this time he wrote his famous deistic and antibiblical work
