By Katherine D. Seelman, Ph.D. During my term as Director of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), I have seen many examples of renewal in our field. Creativity and just plain hard work within the international and domestic arenas have brought innovation to policy, to research as well as to services and supports. Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Science, for example, are emerging and we will all be involved in shaping the future of these endeavors. Today I will describe innovation in policy and research in this most recent period of our millennium and challenge you to better our accomplishments as we move so rapidly into the next millennium!

The Ups and Downs of Technology
Technology, however, can be a two edged sword. For those with visual impairments, the barriers to access go all the way back to what may be the first information revolution, Gutenberg's invention of movable type. This important technological advancement spurred an information revolution, but it also led to significant accessibility problems that are only now being fully addressed. Today's digital revolution is creating new challenges for people with disabilities. Not surprisingly, it is additional technology that enables us to deal with these problems.

servers at Northeastern. Timeline Trips In the 1957 picture shown in the college history pictorial foldout ["The First Hundred Years: A Timeline," September], the caption reads "Undergraduates throng Huntington Avenue as they change classes." I remember that day well. All students shown in the picture are returning to the college after attending an assembly of the entire student body at Symphony Hall. N.U. did not have an auditorium or suitable facility large enough to assemble the entire student body. I suspect N.U. rented Symphony Hall. I don't remember what the agenda of the meeting was. I was able to identify myself and a fellow student, Ralph Neff, E'61, in the foreground. John G. Murphy, E'61
Burlington, Massachusetts
In the foldout section of the September issue is a photo of a student sack race. My dad, Norman E. Cheney, E'21, is one of the students and wishes to correct the year as well as provide names of most of the racers. The year would be 1917 or 1918 [rather than 1910]. The students are from the School of Engineering. Left to right: George Clements, unknown, Clarence Nickerson, Seldon Coombs, Norman E. Cheney, and Jake Worths. Dad worked at Boston Edison till retirement in '65. His memories of Northeastern are vivid, especially the many methods of transportation from Avon (home) to school, such as his bicycle-no brakes and on mostly unpaved roads.

12. Part II: Taking Notes On The Research Materials
Coombs, Norman. The New Negro Immigration and Migration . The Black Experience in America The Immigrant Heritage of America (Twayne, 1972).
http://www.arthes.com/community/delaware/1885prot.html
African American Immigration to Wyandotte County Delaware Township PART II : TAKING NOTES ON THE RESOURCES
Successful completion of this project depends upon completing two types of research procedures. First you must accumulate the data needed to answer the research question. To do that you must enter the necessary data from the Kansas State Census. Second you must review and summarize the literature that places the immigration to Delaware County in the context of the national migration of blacks to the north during this period. The procedures below will guide you through the source material on this page.
The first thing researchers must do is familiarize themselves with the available sources. In many cases, there are a mixture of types of sources ranging from written sources to oral histories to primary sources and secondary sources These sources sometimes present problems in that they may contain some contradictions. Careful note taking is the first step in making order of these often disorderly sources. The sources also contain more information than needed to answer the research question. Only take notes on the parts of each source that answers the research question. Use the procedures below to take notes on each source.

The History of Phrenology on the Web
by John van Wyhe Search Overview organs Texts Images ... Bibliography Reading phrenology
As a wide-spread cultural phenomena, phrenology coloured many aspects of life in the 19th century. This is reflected in countless works of fiction and non-fiction from the period. Many writers found phrenological language useful for describing personality or put familiar phrenological terms in the mouths of their characters. The main-stream British phrenologists, under the leadership of the Edinburgh lawyer George Combe, developed a philosophy of natural laws which, through the books on this site, spread naturalism into every niche of Victorian Britain and America. When Darwin published his Origin of Species (1859), natural selection was received by a readership already well-versed in doctrines esteeming the authority of natural laws. Rather than overturning this scheme, Darwin's views meshed with them readily. This philosophy, almost a religion, of natural laws was predominantly spread by two books which almost everyone who could read (and many who couldn't) knew of in the 19th century. These were: Combe's
