SUMMARY Pierre Corneille, in his original dedication for The Theatre of Illusion, described the play as a "strange monster." He first called these five acts a comedy; later, a "caprice" and an "extravagant trifle." Written in 1635 and staged in 1636, the play vanished from the stage for the next three hundred yearsto be revived in 1937 by Louis Jouvet and the Comedie Francaise. Since then it has been widely considered, in Virginia Scott's words, "Corneille's baroque masterpiece." Today this brilliant piece of wit and drama is available in a new translation from one of America's finest poets and translators of French, Richard Wilbur. Widely praised for his translations of plays by Moliere and Racine, Wilbur now turns his poetic grace to this work, which remains as much a celebration of the comedy of humanity and the magic of life as it was when Corneille wrote it.

SUMMARY Pierre Corneille (1608-84) created French classical tragedy with Le Cid, Horace, Cinna and Polyeucte. Le Cid has claimed more attention, but no work of its time packs more power than Horace. The introduction and other background material by David Clarke, a leading British Corneille expert, make this an up-to-date and appealing edition for both students (of drama/French/comparative literature), general readers, and the theater audience. Corneille used his rhetorical power and brilliant dramaturgical skills to comment on the issues of his day in this case, French national ambitions in Europe. His comment remains relevant three centuries later. SUMMARY Pierre Corneille (1608-84) created French classical tragedy with Le Cid, Horace, Cinna and Polyeucte. Corneille, Pierre (
Corneille, Pierre , the father of French tragedy, born at Rouen , the son of a government legal official; was bred for the bar, but he neither took to the profession nor prospered in the practice of it, so gave it up for literature ; threw himself at once into the drama; began by dramatising an incident in his own life, and became the creator of the dramatic art in France ; his first tragedies are “The Cid,” which indeed is his masterpiece, “Horace,” “Cinna,” “Polyeucte,” “Rodogune,” and “Le Menteur”; in his verses, which are instinct with vigour of conception as well as sublimity of feeling, he paints men as they should be, virtuous in character, brave in spirit , and animated by the most exalted sentiments. Goethe contrasts him with Racine : “Corneille,” he says, “delineated great men;
