[Illustration] INTRODUCTION.[1] "THE book is not a novel" is a phrase often in the mouth of critics, who on second thoughts might, perhaps, add with less emphasis, "It does not conform to the common type of novel." Fortified, however, with that sense of rectitude that dictates conformity to our neighbours and a safe acquiescence in the mysterious movements of public taste, the critics have exclaimed with touching unanimity"What a pity Jefferies tried to write novels! Why didn't he stick to essays in natural history!"

In general, the strategy of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires was to gather native populations into centers called Indian Reductions reducciones de indios ), in order to Christianize , tax, and govern them more efficiently. The Jesuit interpretation of this strategy was implemented primarily in an area that corresponds to modern day Paraguay amongst the Tupi Guarani peoples. Later reductions were extended into areas now part of Argentina Brazil , and Bolivia Jesuit reductions were different from the reductions in other regions because the indigenous people (Indians) were expected to convert to Christianity but not necessarily European culture. Charting the contours of the long turn of the century from 1860 to 1940, The Fiction of Geopolitics studies a wide range of writers, genres, and disciplines, and interrogates the status of geopolitics as a powerful twentieth-century fiction. It argues, through a reading of anarchist and imperialist geographers, that geopolitics emerged as a pseudoscience from the breakdown of nineteenth-century ideas of culture. Four key words inform the organisation of the book: culture, nihilism, utopia and sabotage. Each rubric outlines a different set of issues organised in historical sequence from the novels of Wilkie Collins to the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Crossing genres and disciplines, and drawing on a variety of historical and theoretical sources, the book moves back and forth from Victorian to modernist fields of study to show how the nineteenth-century European hypothesis of culture haunts the twentieth-century fiction of geopolitics.
