Notes to The Siege of Berlin
By Alphonse Daudet AUTHOR NOTE
D AUDET STORY NOTE This is the simplest of tales, scarcely more than an anecdote, but it is told with tender irony and with patriotic pathos. There is a directness, a sense of reality, due to the device of putting the narrative into the mouth of the attending physician, who tells merely what he saw. Daudet once remarked that England was the last of foreign countries to welcome his novels, and that he was surprised at the fact, since for him, as for the typical Englishman, the intimacy of home life had great significance Collected Works of Alphonse Daudet List Price: Price:

Fromont and Risler, Tartarin De Tarascon Letters From My Windmill (Penguin Classics) List Price: Price: You Save:
Description
Alphonse Daudet's novels established him as the most successful writer in France by the end of the XIX century; but it was the "Letters", first published in book form in 1869, which remained his favourite creation and has proved his most lasting. Throughout his working life in Paris Daudet never lost his almost umbilical attachment to Provence. These tales of that region are characterised by a tenderness and delicacy, a wistfulness and wry humour, which give moving substance to his claim that to invent, for him, was to remember.

A brilliant collection of entertaining stories In the Land of Pain List Price:
Description
As Julian Barnes writes in the introduction to his superb translation of Alphonse Daudet’s La Doulou, the mostly forgotten writer nowadays “ate at the top literary table” during his lifetime (1840–1897). Henry James described him as “the happiest novelist” and “the most charming story-teller” of his day. Yet if Daudet dined in the highest company, he was also “a member of a less enviable nineteenth-century French club: that of literary syphilitics.”

Le Petit Chose (1868; "The Little Thing"). At the end of the year he joined his elder brother, Ernest, in Paris. Daudet now threw himself into writing and began to frequent literary circles, both Bohemian and fashionable. A handsome young man, he formed a liaison with a model, Marie Rieu, to whom he dedicated his only book of poems, Les Amoureuses (1858; "The Lovers"). His long and troubled relationship with her was to be reflected, much later, in his novel Sapho (1884). He also contributed articles to the newspapers, in particular to Figaro. Mistral Morny His health undermined by poverty and by the venereal disease that was eventually to cost him his life, Daudet spent the winter of 1861-62 in Algeria. One of the fruits of this visit was Chapatin le tueur de lions (1863; "Chapatin the Killer of Lions"), whose lion-hunter hero can be seen as the first sketch of the author's future Tartarin. Daudet's first play, La ("The Last Idol")

Biographical Note A LPHONSE DAUDET Daudet was especially distinguished for his style. He wrote with a great impression of ease, yet he obtained an effect of great brilliance and felicity. He belonged to the realistic school, and though he achieved a very living sense of actuality he escaped the cynicism and brutality that marked the work of some of his colleagues.

http://www.factopia.com/d/daudet_alphons_practical.html
@import url(../index.css); Daudet, ALPHONSE Practical Reference Library do da', (1840-1897), a French novelist, born at Nimes. He went to Paris in 1857 to seek his fortune, but his collections of poems failed to win any attention, and his plays met with little better reception. When he discovered his powers as a story-teller, however, his success was assured. The volumes of short stories, Letters from My Mill and Monday Tales, established his reputation, which was rendered more secure by each novel which he published. Numa Roumestan and The Nabob are probably his greatest works, although many readers find Tartarin of Tarascon the most attractive. Daudet himself regarded Sapho as the best of his writings.
