Dickens, Charles Biography
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens's works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. He had also experienced in his youth oppression, when he was forced to end school in early teens and work in a factory. Dickens's good, bad, and comic characters, such as the cruel miser Scrooge, the aspiring novelist David Copperfield, or the trusting and innocent Mr. Pickwick, have fascinated generations of readers. "In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and so finely felt, as injustice." (from Great Expectations In 1824-27 Dickens studied at Wellington House Academy, London, and at Mr. Dawson's school in 1827. From 1827 to 1828 he was a law office clerk, and then a shorthand reporter at Doctor's Commons. After learning shorthand, he could take down speeches word for word. At the age of eighteen, Dickens applied for a reader's ticket at the British Museum, where he read with eager industry the works of Shakespeare, Goldsmith's History of England , and Berger's Short Account of the Roman Senate . He wrote for True Sun Mirror of Parliament (1832-34), and

DICKENS, Charles.
Beautiful Stories About Children.
John C. Winston Company. Philadelphia: (1898). - First Edition or First Thus. Illustrated with four color lithographs. Scarce collection of Dickens' character portrayals retold by His Granddaughter and others. Undoubtedly an attempt by Dickens' descendants or a shrewd publisher to cash in on the famous family name. In any event an uncommon Dickens title especially so in original 19th Century illustrated dustjacket. Based on the fragile thin paper production of this dustjacket, it seems very likely that this is a unique copy. Near Fine, spine ends darkened, few bent page corners, in Very Good clean dustjacket, lower spine end with quarter sized chip, top spine end chipped cm deep, splitting at lower front spine edge. Byrom considers Alton Locke to be an ambiguous and confusing novel. Kingsley is ambivalent about violence. While he clearly sides with Alton and the notion of a fighting working class, he also agrees with the orderly and conservative ideals of an aristocracy enlightened by the Church. Kingsley is surprising in leaving Catholicism relatively untouched; rather it is the dissenters, especially the Baptists, who receive a harsh criticism. Also, the Tractarians are criticized as is Transcendentalism which Bryom considers Kingsley failed to understand properly. Unlike Yeast which suffered from an excessive authorial presence, the autobiographical mode of Alton Locke results in a work more a novel than a tract. Bryom concludes that Alton Locke Alton Locke

Timeline -Charles Dickens - Early Life -Dickens the successful writer and public figure
Dickens' birth and childhood 1812-22 Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812, three years before the Battle of Waterloo, and died at his house in Kent in 1870, six years before the arrival of the telephone. In that time, the country was transformed and Dickens became the greatest novelist of his age. Charles was the second child of a clerk in the Naval Pay Office. He loved going with his father to taverns (where songs were sung) and to the theatre. He was a very sensitive child, easily hurt by insults and setbacks. Above all he was a great observer of life around him, noting and remembering details of dress and behaviour; we see this in his descriptions of the appearances and mannerisms of his characters. The family moved first to London, then Chatham, and eventually back to London in 1822.
