Disraeli, Benjamin
Disraeli, Benjamin, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881), British writer, statesman, and Prime Minister (1868 and 1874-1880), who for more than three decades exerted a profound influence on British politics and Victorian Britain, and left an enduring stamp on the Conservative Party. Disraeli was born on December 21, 1804, in London and educated at private schools in Blackheath and Walthamstow. Between the ages of 17 and 20 he was a law apprentice in a London office. During the same period he speculated in stocks and suffered heavy financial losses. Primarily in order to pay off his debts, he began writing novels, the first of which, Vivian Grey, appeared in 1826 with some success. Continuing to write novels in a fanciful, romantic vein, he frequented fashionable salons and dressed in an eccentric manner. In 1830 he travelled in Spain, the Balkans, Turkey, and the Levant. Upon his return he decided to enter politics; from 1832 to 1835 he ran unsuccessfully for Parliament, first as a Radical and then three times as a Tory. Disraeli supported the Liberal Party prime minister Lord John Russell in 1847, when his government lifted the ban excluding adherents of the Jewish faith from Parliament. In 1852 Disraeli became Chancellor of the Exchequer under Edward Geoffrey Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, and he held the same office in the Derby ministries of 1858-1859 and 1866-1868.

Benjamin Disraeli:
Utilitarian Follies
A political sect has sprung up avowedly adverse to the Estates of the Realm, and seeking by means which, of course, it holds legal, the abrogation of a majority of them. These anti-constitutional writers, like all new votaries, are remarkable for their zeal and activity. They omit no means of disseminating their creed: they are very active missionaries: there is no medium of the public press of which they do not avail themselves: they have their newspapers, daily and weekly, their magazines, and their reviews. The unstamped press takes the cue from them, and the members of the party who are in Parliament lose no opportunity of dilating on the congenial theme at the public meetings of their constituents.... We have before this had an a priori system of celestial mechanics, and its votaries most syllogistically sent Galileo to a dungeon, after having triumphantly refuted him. We have before this had an a priori system of metaphysics, but where now are the golden volumes of Erigena, and Occam, and Scotus, and Raymond Lully? And now we have an a priori system of politics. The schoolmen are revived in the nineteenth century, and are going to settle the State with their withering definitions, their fruitless logo-machines, and barren dialectics. I should suppose that there is no one of the Utilitarian sages who would not feel offended if I were to style him the Angelical Doctor, like Thomas Aquinas; and I regret from bitter experience, that they have not yet condescended sufficiently to cultivate the art of composition to entitle them to the style of the Perspicuous Doctor, like Walter Burley.

Benjamin Disraeli
In 1830 he travelled to Spain, the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East. From 1832 to 1835 he tried 4 times to get into parliament, first as a Radical and then three times as a Tory. He wasn`t really interested in which party he belonged to he just wanted to get into power. Even with the four defeats he became well known. The reason for this was the pamphlets he issued and the letters he wrote to the London Times where he complained about the failure of the church and state to fulfil their duty of improving the working and living conditions of the majority of people. In 1847 Disreali supported Lord John Russell in lifting the ban on people of the Jewish religion being a Member of Parliament. In 1852 he at last got a post in Government which gave him some power when he become the Chancellor of the Exchequer (the Minister in charge of the national econamy) and he held that post 3 times. In 1859 as Conservative leader in the House of Commons he introduced a bill to give all taxpayers the right to vote but it failed. However he suceeded with an even better bill named the Reform Act of 1867 which gave householders the vote, but men only.
  • These are some of his important achievements as Prime Minister:
He changed the laws to improve housing and working conditions.

Benjamin Disraeli (1804 1881)
Benjamin Disraeli was born on 21 December 1804 at Bedford Row London. He was the eldest son and second of five children born to Isaac D'Israeli and his wife Maria Basevi. Although the family was Jewish, Benjamin was baptised at St. Andrew's Anglican church in 1817. He was educated at Miss Roper's school in Islington and then went to Higham Hall School in Walthamstow between 1817 and 1821. In 1824 he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn but he withdrew in 1831. After that Disraeli travelled throughout Europe and the Near East; whilst on his travels he contracted venereal disease and was subjected to the mercury treatment on his return to England. Since gonorrhoea causes sterility in males, this may explain why he remained childless. On his return he abandoned a career in Law to pursue one in writing. In 1825 the daily newspaper The Representative appeared: it was founded by Disraeli and John Murray but it lasted only a few months. However, his first novel

He was a follower of Sir Robert Peel until 1843, but he then became spokesman for the Young England group of Tories, espousing a sort of romantic and aristocratic Toryism. He expressed these themes in the political novels Coningsby (1844) and Sybil (1846). He criticized Peel's free-trade legislation, particularly repeal of the corn laws (1846). After repeal went through (1846), he helped bring down Peel's ministry. At the death of Lord George Bentinck (1848), Disraeli became leader of the Tory protectionists. Gladstone vs Disraeli
William Gladstone
Benjamin Disraeli The second half of the 19th century was dominated by two politicians - Benjamin Disraeli and William Ewart Gladstone. A Conservative, Disraeli opposed Peel's repeal of the Corn Laws which had inflated the price of imported grain to support home farmers. He was three times Chancellor of the Exchequer and twice Prime Minister. Formerly a Conservative, Gladstone supported the repeal of the Corn Laws and moved to the opposition (Whigs, and from 1868 Liberals). He was four times Chancellor and four times Prime Minister - his final term starting at age 82. Disraeli and Gladstone agreed about little, although both promised to repeal income tax at the 1874 General Election. Disraeli won - the tax stayed (and probably would have done under Gladstone too). Benjamin Disraeli
Prime Minister 1868, 1874 - 80 William Gladstone once said: "Mr Disraeli was in the centre of three rings - his party, which he understood perfectly and governed completely; the House of Commons, of which his knowledge was good; the country, of which he was very ignorant." (Quoted in The Prime Ministers Vol2 P85) Perhaps, however, Disraeli understood more than Gladstone realised. Gladstone with his religious earnestness assumed that he could change the fate of nations. With his sense of man's centrality to the world he felt that the highest office in the world's most powerful country must confer real power on its holder. Perhaps Disraeli knew better. He realised that managing Parliament was a symbolic act in managing Britain, but did not always go much further. He governed what he could and did not try to govern what he couldn't. Benjamin Disraeli was born 21st December 1804, and was brought up in Holborn and Bloomsbury, London. His parents were Jewish, but seemed to reject most of their religion. Young Benjamin had lessons in Hebrew, but was to become a member of the Church of England at the age of 12. Whether he felt particularly earnest about any kind of religion is debatable. Disraeli left school at fifteen, entered a solicitor's office for three years, and gave it up. Disraeli got to the age of 20 as an ambitious young man going nowhere. He tried to find direction by setting up a newspaper called
