From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Mary Abigail Dodge (March 31, 1833 - August 17, 1896) was an American writer and essayist, she wrote under pseudonym Gail Hamilton . Her writing is noted for its wit and promotion of equality of education and occupation for women. Mary Abigail Dodge was born March 31, 1833 in Hamilton, Massachusetts. She was born on a farm, the seventh child of Hannah and James Dodge. She was sent to a boarding school, and within a year was sent to the Ipswich Female Seminary. She graduated in 1850, and proceeded to teach there for four years, until she got a job at Hartford High School. She disliked the job, however, and decided to write poetry. editor Gamaliel Bailey read her work in 1856, and hired her as a governess to his children. from there, she sent in her publications to anti-slavery news papers, and wrote a biography on James Blaine. She disliked attention, and chose the pen name Gail (last part of her last name) Hamilton (her place of birth). Her essays were best known for their harshness on men. While finishing her biography on James Blaine, she had a stroke, leaving her in a coma that lasted for several weeks. She then returned to Hamilton, before dying of a cerebral hemorrhage August 17, 1896.

INTRODUCTION This guide describes collections documenting literature, reading, and writing in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC) at LSU. It includes the papers of authors, novelists, playwrights, poets, journalists, editors, critics, professors, and historians as writers . Materials in the collections include drafts of literary works (novels, short stories, essays, and plays, among other genres) correspondence, diaries, biographical sketches, research materials, galley proofs, and book reviews. "Literary works" as defined here include popular works, poetry transcribed in diaries, and other common efforts at literary expression. Collections dealing with reading and publishing are also described in this guide. Diary-writing in itself (apart from diaries that contain literature or are the diaries of literary authors) does not qualify a collection for inclusion in this guide. Other diaries will be found in the guides to plantations and women's collections. Most of the collections are from Louisiana, but there are also materials from other areas of the Lower Mississippi Valley. In addition to these resources, please see the

Ha mi lt o n Qa i l. See Dodge, Mary Abigail. Ha mi lt o n O. , the county-seat of Butler County, is built on both sides of the Miami River. The city owns and operates its own gas and water works. It has thriving factories, which are operated by a system of hydraulics fed by the river, which is turned from its channel into an immense reservoir, while waterpower is also obtained from the canal. Many of these factories have been established in the past few years, and they produce paper, flour, woolen goods, agricultural implements, machinery, tools and iron. Four railroads connect the city with all parts of the country. The public schools occupy fine buildings and take high rank. Population 35,279. It is an important railroad-center, stands at the head of lake-navigation, and in manufacturing industries almost excels any other city in Canada. Population about 73,542.
