Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a Russian novelist, journalist, short-story writer whose psychological penetration into the human soul had a profound influence on the 20th century novel. Dostoevsky was born in Moscow, as the second son of a former army doctor. He was educated at home and at a private school. Shortly after the death of his mother in 1837 he was sent to St. Petersburg, where he entered the Army Engineering College. In 1839 Dostoevsky's father died probably of apoplexy but there were strong rumors that he was murdered by his own serfs. Dostoevsky graduated as a military engineer, but resigned in 1844 to devote himself to writing. His first novel, Poor Folk appeared in 1846. It was followed by

June 1, 2008 by Ben The Brothers Karamazov (1880) by Fyodor Dostoyevsky with an Introduction by David McDuff trans. David McDuff Penguin Classics, 920pp. Near to the end of Dostoyevsky’s 1880 masterpiece, The Brothers Karamazov , one of the brothers, Ivan Fyodorovich, suffering from an alcohol-related hallucinatory disorder delirium tremens , is visited by the Devil. It is first physical manifestation of the Devil in this work, and his final appearance in Dostoyevsky’s work, but this Devil has been a constant “symphonic motif” throughout. The Devil’s appearance is more than symbolic of Ivan’s state of mind, the Devil points to the very heart of Dostoyevsky’s work. As Dostoyevsky indicated in his letter of the 16 March 1878 to V. V. Mikhailov, The Brothers Karamazov was to have been a novel about children. It is through this letter that one can begin to systematically untwine the deeper concerns of the final novel. Dostoyevsky says

    Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Dostoyevsky (Dostoevsky), Fyodor (Feodor) Mikhailovich, Russian author, born in Moscow, on the 3oth of October 1821, was the second son of a retired military surgeon of a decayed noble family. He was educated at Moscow and at the military engineering academy in St. Petersburg, which he left in 1843 with the grade of sub-lieutenant. Next year his father died, and he resigned his commission in order to devote himself to literature—thus commencing a long struggle with ill-health and penury. In addition to the old Russian masters Gogol and Pushkin, Balzac and George Sand supplied him with literary ideals. He knew little of Dickens, but his first story is thoroughly Dickensian in character. The hero is a Russian “Tom Pinch”, who entertains a pathetic, humble adoration for a fair young girl, a solitary waif like himself. Characteristically the Russian story ends in “tender gloom”. The girl marries a middle-aged wealthy man; the hero dies of a broken heart, and his funeral is described in lamentable detail. The germ of all Dostoyevsky’s imaginative work may be discovered here. The story was submitted in manuscript to the Russian critic, Bielinski, and excited him by its power over the emotions. It appeared in the course of 1846 under the title of

    Biography
Russian writer, one of Russia's greatest novelists. His works include "Crime and Punishment," 1866 and "The Brothers Karamazov," 1880. Born to a physician in Moscow, he went to army engineering college for three years in St. Petersburg. He was a political activist in youth and spent four years in a Siberia labor camp. Epilepsy and emphysema took their toll and he suffered from terrible bouts of nervous prostration. At 59, he looked older, pale and gaunt with dark circles under his eyes. He worried that he might not be able to care for his "three golden heads," his wife Anna, 24 years younger, and 11-year-old Lyobov and 9-year-old Fyodor. On 1/26/1881 (OS) he moved a heavy bookcase to retrieve a pen. An artery in his lung burst and he hemorrhaged. Two days later he told his Anna that it was time to die, and consoled her. In their small apartment in St. Petersburg, Dostoevsky died at 8:38 PM.

Dostoevsky Feb 1999 (Paperback) - Revised Ed. Book Review The talented Alex Jennings creates an atmosphere of gripping psychological tension and brings a variety of characters to life in this new audio edition of a crime classic. When the student Raskolnikov puts his philosophical theory to the ultimate test of murder, a tragic tale of suffering and redemption unfolds in the dismal setting of the slums of czarist, prerevolutionary St. Petersburg. While Jennings's adept repertoire of British accents works to demonstrate the varying classes of characters, it occasionally distracts the listener from the Russian setting. However, Dostoyevsky's rendering of 18th-century Russia emerges unscathed, bringing the dark pathos (such as wretched poverty and rampant suffering) to life.
