Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) British writer, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who is the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. To increase his income Charles Altamont painted, made book illustrations, and also worked as a sketch artist on criminal trials. Not long after arriving Edinburgh he started to drink, he suffered from epilepsy and was eventually institutionalized. Richard Doyle (1824-83), the uncle of A.C. Doyle and the son of the caricaturist John Doyle, was also an illustrator. He worked for

90. Sherlockian Resources On The Internet: A Survey - By John Bergquist, BSI

Sherlockian Resources on the Internet: A Survey
Updated January 2010
"Data! data! data!" [Holmes] cried impatiently. "I can't make bricks without clay." (COPP) The Sherlockian Web surfer of today has more data at his or her disposal than even the Master could have assimilated. Whether one is interested in pursuing serious research, seeking out rare books or memorabilia, or keeping up with the doings of other Sherlockians, the World Wide Web provides vast stores of information. This modest survey attempts to help one pick out a few choice strands to follow. First, some caveats:
  • The Web is not "a fixed point in a changing age," (LAST) but rather a moving target in constant flux. Web sites and URLs disappear or change often and without notice. Sometimes a site's Web server may be temporarily down just try back later.
  • Because of the Web's vastness and ephemeral nature, this survey is of necessity incomplete and will be outdated as soon as you view it.
  • The quality of Web sites and the accuracy of their content is uneven, since most sites lack the editorial safeguards of print media. Many Sherlockian sites would not win any design awards, yet their enthusiasm helps one overlook any shortcomings. Starting Points Research Collecting Sherlockians ... Envoi

    Strange Little Dancing Men
    Explained at Last
The Dancingmen font distribution ReadMe text in extenso:
ORIGINS As Mr. Holmes soon deduced, their puzzle was actually a rather unsophisticated substitution cipher, i.e. the cryptographic method in which each character of the normal alphabet is globally substituted by another discrete (and seemingly nonsensical) sign or image. To use a modern metaphor: "As if the keyboard had been totally remapped". From the rather limited information offered by the narrator Dr. Watson it is difficult even for the most reflective reader to conclude whether the actual character images were choosen totally at random, or if there is a logical system behind the bizarre postures of all those little "dancing men". Indeed, judging by the contemporary original illustrations, a few characters are not even consistent from one message to another! HOW TO USE THIS FONT Accordingly, there are no actual "upper" or "lower" case letters in the Dancingmen font. In contrast to normal writing rules, all text should be written with lower case letters (i.e. without using the shift key), except for the last letter of each word! When the shift key is pressed that ultimate letter gets the required little flag. The quickest way to write a message, headline etc with this font is to first type the text down completely in a common "readable" font like Geneva (carefully adhering to the writing rules above, of course), and then finally changing the font to Dancingmen. Now you have a secret text, guaranteed to puzzle all but the most brilliant detectives!

    History
This webring, originally founded by David Rohrman aka Professor Moriarty, was passed onto Rick Freeman aka Fred Porlock at Yoxley Old Place when David graduated from his college and could no longer keep his website nor his ring. It has now passed onto me, as Porlock did not want to maintain two separate webrings on the same subject indefinitely. I, Cress , aka Miss Roylott in Sherlockian circles, shall do my best to maintain the ring to the satisfaction of the members. Here is a quotation about the original Moriarty, our ring's namesake: For years past I have continually been conscious ... of some deep organized power which forever stands in the way of the law... For years I have endeavoured to break through the veil which shrouded it, and at last the time came when I seized my thread and followed it until it led me after a thousand cunning windings to Professor Moriarty... He is the Napoleon of crime, Watson... He is a genious, a philosopher, an abstract thinker... He sits motionless, like a spider in the centre of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them.
