Dufferin and Ava, Frederick Temple Blackwood, Marquess In 1879 he was appointed British ambassador at St. Petersburg, and in 1881 he was transferred at Constantinople. From 1884 to 1888 he was viceroy of India; from 1888 to 1891 he was ambassador extraordinary at Rome; and from 1891 to 1896 he was ambassador at Paris. He died at Clandeboye, Ireland on February 12, 1902. In 1862 he married Harriot Georgiana, eldest daughter of Archibald Rowan Hamilton, of Killyleagh Castle, County Down, Ireland; and by her he had several children. In 1871 he was created Viscount Clandeboye and Earl of Dufferin, in the peerage of the United Kingdom; and in 1888 Marquess of Dufferin and Ava. He was the author of Letters from high latitudes (London, 1860) and of a number of essays on Irish affairs; and collections of his speeches were published in Toronto (1878) and in London (1882). Historical Note
William Wetmore Story (1819-1895), an American sculptor, essayist, poet, and lawyer, was the son of Joseph Story (1779-1845), a Supreme Court Justice. William Story settled in Rome in 1847 with his wife Emelyn Eldredge (d. 1894) and their children.

Arranged alphabetically by author.
Scope and Content
The bulk of the collection is letters to William and Emelyn Story or to their son and his wife, Waldo and Maud Story, from their international set of friends in Rome. The letters mainly concern social engagements and introductions. Also includes two letters to Judge Story, a few letters between third parties, a manuscript poem by William Story, and autograph signatures.

The Abraham Hayward Correspondence Files are chiefly comprised of letters addressed to Abraham Hayward by various English writers, politicians and society figures between 1831 and 1884. Among the correspondents represented are: Lord Brougham, lord chancellor; John Wilson Croker, politician and writer; Isaac D'Israeli, writer; W. E. Gladstone, prime minister and author; Letitia Elizabeth Landon, poet; Edward Bulwer-Lytton, writer and politician; Lady Sydney (Owenson) Morgan, novelist and hostess; Count D'Orsay, man of fashion; Samuel Rogers, poet; and William Makepeace Thackeray, novelist. A few items in the Files are letters addressed to recipients other than Hayward, some apparently collected by him as autographs. The Harold Nicolson Papers consists of papers of the English diplomat, journalist, and biographer Harold Nicolson (1886-1968). These papers primarily contain correspondence received by Nicolson, but there is also a large series of letters written by Nicolson to Richard Rumbold, as well as a few to others. Also included in the collection are manuscripts and/or working notes for four of Nicolson's published works. Furthermore, there is a small amount of papers of others, chiefly correspondence by and to Nicolson's wife, “Vita†(Victoria) Sackville-West.

Drake, Inc. in the 1930s and includes correspondence of Dorothy Furman, Francis W. Halsey, Temple Scott, as well as letters written by 19th-century American political and military figures, American and British literary figures, clerics, and actors. Of added interest are the receipt books of John C. Freeke (1795-1799), Luke Gage (1835-1839), and Adam Partridge (1858-1885) which record the settlement of accounts with clients in New York, giving sums paid, nature of the debt, and the signatures of the creditors.
