Albrecht Dürer [ˈalbʁɛçt ˈdyːʁɐ] ; 21 May 1471 – 6 April 1528) was a German painter printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg . His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. His well-known works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, Knight, Death, and the Devil Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists , while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium.

Drer, Four Books on Human Proportions Drer, Albrecht (b. May 21, 1471, Imperial Free City of Nrnberg [Germany]d. April 6, 1528, Nrnberg), German painter, printmaker, draughtsman and art theorist, generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. His woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work. Born in Nrnberg as the third son of the Hungarian goldsmith Albrecht Drer. Began as an apprentice to his father in 1485, but his earliest known work, one of his many self portraits, was made in 1484. Died in Nrnberg in 1528. During 1513 and 1514 Drer created the greatest of his copperplate engravings: the Knight St. Jerome in His Study , and Melencolia I all of approximately the same size, about 24.5 by 19.1 cm (9.5 by 7.5 inches). The extensive, complex, and often contradictory literature concerning these three engravings deals largely with their enigmatic, allusive, iconographic details. Although repeatedly contested, it probably must be accepted that the engravings were intended to be interpreted together. There is general agreement, however, that Drer, in these three master engravings, wished to raise his artistic intensity to the highest level, which he succeeded in doing. Finished form and richness of conception and mood merge into a whole of classical perfection.

First period (before 1505)
After the earliest works of his youth (portraits, Madonnas, coats-of-arms , landscape-sketches) he set up in 1494 a studio of his own. In the same year he married Agnes Frey but they had no children. Among his Nuremberg friends the learned humanist Willibald Pirkheimer held the first place. Besides great advancement in learning, Pirkheimer the happiness of a lifelong friendship and the acquaintance with classical antiquity which he occasionally drew upon in his work. German Middle Ages , remained essentially German ; the influence of the art of Italy and the Netherlands was merely supplementary. In his own century there were few chances for mural paintings ; but the demand for altar-pieces and portraits was all the greater. His woodcuts were eagerly sought after by the general public, his engravings on copper by connoisseurs. Among his fine compositions are: the

Education and early career
Drer was the second son of the goldsmith Albrecht Drer the Elder, who had left Hungary to settle in Nuremberg in 1455, and of Barbara Holper, who had been born there. Drer began his training as a draughtsman in the goldsmith's workshop of his father. His precocious skill is evidenced by a remarkable self-portrait done in 1484, when he was 13 years old (Albertina, Vienna), and by a Madonna with Musical Angels, done in 1485, which is already a finished work of art in the late Gothic style. In 1486, Drer's father arranged for his apprenticeship to the painter and woodcut illustrator Michael Wohlgemut, whose portrait Drer would paint in 1516. After three years in Wohlgemuth's workshop, he left for a period of travel. In 1490 Drer completed his earliest known painting, a

See also: Renaissance Art VIEW IMAGE LIST "Albrecht Duerer was without doubt the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. Living in Nuremberg, half-way between the Netherlands and Italy, he found inspiration in the work of painters of both the major European artistic centres of his time. But rather than simply imitating what others were doing, Duerer was very much an innovator. He is, for example, the first artist who is known to have painted a self-portrait and to have done a landscape painting of a specific scene. "The range and versatility of Duerer's work is astonishing. His woodcuts and engravings made him famous across Europe and he is still considered to be the greatest printmaker of all time. As an oil painter, Duerer was equally successful at religious and secular subjects, producing magnificent altarpieces and powerful portraits. His drawings and watercolours are impressive for their diversity of subject-matter and the varied media in which they were produced. Duerer was to have a major influence on the development of European art.

He traveled much. In 1490 he left his native city for four year, probably initially visiting Cologne and possibly the Netherlands. He traveled to Italy twice in 1494-95 and 1505-07, visited Venice and Bologna, perhaps Florence and Rome.
