  • Dyer, Frank Lewis and Thomas C. Martin. Edison, His Life and Inventions. NY: Harper, 1910. Text online at http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/hst/biography/Edison/chap10.html
This book, which is available also online as I found out later, has a chapter just about the phonograph. It is highly useful. It shows some of the things Edison did with the phonograph, like record his speeches and then play them back in another city.
  • Early Talking Machines After Edison. (online) Available http://history.acusd.edu/gen/recording/afteredison.html, Jan. 3rd, 2005
This website is excellent. It contains pictures of original documents regarding the phonograph. It also includes a recording of the first recording that Edison did.
  • Edison National Historic Site. Department of the Interior, no date given.
This pamphlet has some pictures on it, but it mostly has information about Edison's inventions. It contains a good sized paragraph about the phonograph. Also included with the pamphlet was a large package of pictures.

edit Traveler
Ricalton travelled extensively and he circumnavigated the world seven times. His journeys included Iceland Russia , and the Amazon Thomas Edison sent him on a mission to Ceylon to find the right bamboo filament for a light bulb; and this filament was used by Edison for nine months until the suitability of tungsten was discovered.
edit Photographer
Ricalton was a prolific photographer, leaving over 100,000 images, among them a large collection of stereoscopic images. He was a war photographer during the Spanish-American War (1898-1899) in the Philippines , during the Boxer Rebellion (1900) in China , and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) in Manchuria . Phonomotor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The phonomotor or "vocal engine" was a device invented by Thomas Edison in 1878 to measure the mechanical force of sound. It converted sound energy or sound power into rotary motion which could drive a machine such as a small saw or drill. It derived from his work on the telephone and phonograph
Contents
edit Construction
Sound waves entering a mouthpiece and falling on a diaphragm were conveyed by a piece of rubber tubing and a spring to a pawl, which vibrated against a very fine-toothed ratchet wheel. This caused a shaft and flywheel to rotate. . Steady pressure from breath produced no motion, but some voices could produce rapid motion. The speed of rotation depended on the pitch of the sound. It was able to operate a small drill or or saw which could bore or cut wood. When a long sustained sound got the flywheel up to an appreciable speed, considerable force was required to stop it.
edit Impact
The Chicago Tribune in May 1878 predicted that it would be the basis for sound powered toys such as dolls which bow when spoken to, though none are known to have been marketed.

Most of these inventions were not completely original but improvements of earlier patents, and were actually made by his numerous employees - Edison was frequently criticized for not sharing the credits. Nevertheless, Edison received patents worldwide, including the United States United Kingdom France , and Germany . Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.
  • Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
    • This is presented as a statement of 1877, as quoted in From Telegraph to Light Bulb with Thomas Edison (2007) by Deborah Hedstrom, p. 22 During all those years of experimentation and research, I never once made a discovery. All my work was deductive, and the results I achieved were those of invention, pure and simple. I would construct a theory and work on its lines until I found it was untenable. Then it would be discarded at once and another theory evolved. This was the only possible way for me to work out the problem. ... I speak without exaggeration when I say that I have constructed 3,000 different theories in connection with the electric light, each one of them reasonable and apparently likely to be true. Yet only in two cases did my experiments prove the truth of my theory. My chief difficulty was in constructing the carbon filament. . . . Every quarter of the globe was ransacked by my agents, and all sorts of the queerest materials used, until finally the shred of bamboo, now utilized by us, was settled upon.

Thomas Alva Edison
Life magazine
(USA), in a special double issue, placed Edison first in the " 100 Most Important People in the Last 1000 Years ", claiming his light bulb "lit up the world", although the first light bulb was pioneered by Heinrich Goebel (who does not even appear on Life 's list). Edison's placement has been criticized as misunderstood patriotism, since even during his lifetime there were non-US inventors whose inventions (combustion engines, cars, electricity-making machines, etc.) are believed by some to have had greater impact than Edison's, despite Edison's marked genius in his creations. Mozart was educated by his dad as the Mozart family toured Europe from 1763-1766. 9. Laura Ingalls Wilder was homeschooled until her parents finally settled in De Smet in what was then Dakota Territory. She started teaching school herself when she was only 15 years old. 10.
