Mathematics Programs (other than TeX-related)
Of course, every mathematician wants Mathematica and a few other expensive programs. We do have those installed on our department computers. But here I'm going to list some free programs that even an impoverished graduate student can install on his or her computer. Some of them are pretty good; some may suffice for many purposes. Following are some good places to look for math software (but some of these websites mix together freeware and shareware, unfortunately): I will list here a few of the programs that look good to me, but I haven't tried most of them; let me know what you think. I'm giving preference to programs that seem to be intended for a general mathematical audience (i.e., I'm omitting programs that suit more specialized needs). Also, I'm giving preference to programs that seem to be easy to install and/or to understand, and to programs whose installation files are small enough that I can fit many of them onto our department's CD. I'm sorting these programs into a few categories, but there is actually some overlap between categories.

620 days ago Welcome to editors.co.uk. This site has been built, with a website content management system called Textpattern, as part of an evaluation of maybe a dozen such systems. (If this stuff interests you, take a look at CMS – and leave a comment or two there if you have the time.) The editors.co.uk site was originally conceived, over a decade ago, to promote the services of Business Editors, a small consultancy devoted to business communications. That strand of work is now more or less dormant, but there are remnants of the original site here – notably an essay on the use of Initial Capitals, and a page about useful guides to style, supported by the links on the right. Meanwhile, other branches of the same small consultancy are gaining strength: Guide Editors, devoted to travel guidebooks, and Web Editors, devoted to site building. Hence the interest in CMS software.

51. A Tale Of Five Editors
Eric Raymond analyzes the designs and implementations of five Unix text Editors.
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/taoup/html/ch13s02.html
A Tale of Five Editors Prev Chapter 13. Complexity Next
A Tale of Five Editors
Now we're going to use five different Unix editors as case studies. It will be helpful to bear in mind a set of benchmark tasks as we examine these designs:
  • Plain-text editing. Manipulating plain ASCII (or, in this internationalized age, perhaps Unicode) files with no structure known to the editor above byte level, or perhaps line level. Rich-text editing. Editing of text with attributes; these might include font changes, color, or other sorts of properties of text spans (such as being a hyperlink). Editors that can do this have to be able to translate between some presentation of the attributes in the user interface and some on-disk representation of the data (such as HTML, XML, or other rich-text formats.) Syntax awareness. An editor that is syntax-aware knows that input events have a grammar, and does things like automatically changing the indent level when it recognizes the beginning or end of a block scope in a programming language. Editors that are syntax-aware also commonly highlight syntax with colors or distinguished fonts. Output parsing of batch command output. The commonest case of this in the Unix world is running a C compilation from inside the editor, trapping the error messages, and then being able to step through the error locations without leaving the editor.

Tired of being a victim of the browser wars? Do you get frustrated after spending long hours creating a webpage only to watch in horror when it doesn't look or function correctly in the "other" browser? The bottom line is that creating pages that will reach a vast majority of surfers, isn't easy. New browser versions pop up all the time, each supporting a different level of technology and no one seems to adhere to the W3C standards. Should you have to sacrifice your content to reach your audience? We don't think so!!
