Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
If America's founding fathers had anticipated the digital frontier, there would be a clause in the Constitution protecting your rights online, as well.

Instead, a modern group of freedom fighters was necessary to extend the original vision into the digital world.
That's where the Electronic Frontier Foundation comes in.
Just as Patriots fought for liberty and freedom, we fight measures that threaten basic human rights. Only the dominion we defend is the vast wealth of digital information, innovation, and technology that resides online.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation is made up of passionate people lawyers, volunteers, and visionaries working in the trenches, battling to protect your rights and the rights of web surfers everywhere. The dedicated people of EFF challenge legislation that threatens to put a price on what is invaluable; to control what must remain boundless.
Electronic Frontier Foundation:
Because being able to share ideas and information is the reason the Web was created in the first place!

From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990 well before the Internet was on most people's radar and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.

Why I'm Not Answering Your Email
Don't Trust the Census
We are in the middle of another decennial data-rape, also known as the Census. But you shouldn't tell the Census anything. The law says they can't release the info you provide for 99 years but if they want to, they just change the law. They've done it twice before. When the US Government rounded up Japanese-Americans during WW2, the "Second War Powers Act" let them use the "supposedly private" census data to tell the thugs where their victims lived. Homeland Security zealots extracted similar data about Muslims and Middle Easterners in 2003, under the Patriot Act. Will your innocent ancestry, profession, or hobby be the target of the next hysterical witch-hunt? By then it will be too late to un-reveal your information. Don't help the government constrain you; always decline to give them information. They aren't recording it for your benefit. Details
US Homeland Security recorded what book I was reading as I crossed the border
In direct violation of the Privacy Act, which states that federal agencies shall not record the how citizens use their First Amendment rights (unless specifically instructed to do so by statute), the US Department of Homeland Security recorded in my permanent dossier that as I flew into San Francisco from London, I had " many small flashlights with pot leaves on them. He had a book entitled 'Drugs And Your Rights'.

A group working to oppose legislation limiting individual rights online.
http://www.uiuc.edu/ro/eff/
Welcome to the homepage of the Student Elecronic Frontier Foundation. MISSION Imagine a world where technology can empower us all to share knowledge, ideas, thoughts, humor, music, words and art with friends, strangers and future generations. That world is here and now, made possible with the electronic network the Internet with the power to connect us all. And future developments in technology will enable us to access information and communicate with others in even more powerful ways. But governments and corporate interests worldwide are trying to prevent us from communicating freely through new technologies, just as when those in positions of power controlled the production and distribution of or even burned books they did not want people to read in the Middle Ages. But only by fighting for our rights to speak freely whatever the medium whether books, telephones, or computers can we protect and enhance the human condition. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was created to defend our rights to think, speak, and share our ideas, thoughts, and needs using new technologies, such as the Internet and the World Wide Web. EFF is the first to identify threats to our basic rights online and to advocate on behalf of free expression in the digital age. WHO WE ARE We are a registered student group at the University of Illinois furthering the mission expressed above. Specifically, we, as a group, work to oppose legislation limiting individual rights online through direct political lobbying, informational campaigns, and letter writing. We also plan to host two workshops relating to civil liberties online.
