    George Eliot (1819-1880)
George Eliot   George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of the leading English novelists of the 19th century. Her novels, most famously 'Middlemarch', are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights. George Eliot was born on 22 November 1819 in rural Warwickshire. When her mother died in 1836, Eliot left school to help run her father's household. In 1841, she moved with her father to Coventry and lived with him until his death in 1849. Eliot then travelled in Europe, eventually settling in London. In 1850, Eliot began contributing to the 'Westminster Review', a leading journal for philosophical radicals, and later became its editor. She was now at the centre of a literary circle through which she met George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived until his death in 1878. Lewes was married and their relationship caused a scandal. Eliot was shunned by friends and family.

George Eliot (1819-1880) - pseudonym for Mary Ann Cross, also Marian Evans, original surname Evans Victorian writer, a humane freethinker, whose insightful psychological novels paved way to modern character portrayals - contemporary of Dostoevsky (1821-1881), who at the same time in Russia developed similar narrative techniques. Eliot's liaison with the married writer and editor George Henry Lewes arise among the rigid Victorians much indignation, which calmed down with the progress of her literary fame. "Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic - the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years as a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common." (from Middlemarch Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) was born in Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire. Her father was a carpenter who rose to be a land agent. When she was a few months old, the family moved to Griff, a 'cheerful red-brick, ivory-covered house', and there Eliot spent 21 years of his life among people that he later depicted in her novels. She was educated at home and in several schools, and developed a strong evangelical piety at Mrs. Wallington's School at Neneaton. However, later Eliot rejected her dogmatic faith. When her mother died in 1836, she took charge of the family household. In 1841 she moved with her father to Coventry, where she lived with him until his death in 1849. During this time she met Charles Bray, a free-thinking Coventry manufacturer. His wife, Caroline (Cara) was the sister of Charles Hennel, the author of a work entitled

The idea of God, so far as it has been a high spiritual influence, is the ideal of a goodness entirely human. (Letter to the Hon. Mrs H. F. Ponsonby, 10 December 1874) We do not expect people to be deeply moved by what is not unusual. That element of tragedy which lies in the very fact of frequency, has not yet wrought itself into the coarse emotion of mankind; and perhaps our frames could hardly bear much of it. ( Middlemarch bk. 2, ch. 20)

Her life and works were often controversial, but the personal letters of the 19th-century English novelist known as George Eliot were often viewed as disappointingly dull, says Prof. Rosemarie Bodenheimer (English). Bodenheimer, however, was so fascinated by them she wrote a biography of Mary Ann Evans, the woman behind the male pseudonym. "The care with which Eliot constructed her self-representations has led many readers to reject her correspondence as inexpressive," said Bodenheimer. "But it seemed clear to me that there was a war going on within her as she tried to compose her emotions and I had to explore that battle." The Real Life of Mary Ann Evans: George Eliot, Her Letters and Fiction is the first book to demonstrate how the tensions in Evans' life fueled her writing career, according to Bodenheimer. Eliot's novels, Bodenheimer says, resonate with the struggle of being both ambitious and female in Victorian culture. By reading her letters alongside her novels, stories and poems, Bodenheimer found she was able to define the personal paradoxes that helped shape Eliot's fictional characters and narrative style. "Much writing on Eliot talks about her as an intellectual, as someone who had ideas - and she was that - but I'm talking about her as someone whose ideas were also part of an emotional economy and inseparable from it," said Bodenheimer. "I've offered a look at the way her mind actually worked, rather than at her abstract ideas."

    Biography
British writer, given the name George Eliot by her lover, writer George Henry Lewes inasmuch as a woman writer would not have been given any credence. One of the most intellectually rigorous writers of the 19th century, her books include the classics "The Mill on the Floss", "Silas Marner" and "Middlemarch," 1871, considered her masterpiece. The fifth child of an ambitious farmer, Eliot was considered intelligent and gifted, though remarkably unattractive. She was brought up in a constricting conventional religious atmosphere. After her mom died in 1836, she cared for her beloved dad until his death. At the age of 22 she declared herself an atheist. which had alienated her from her father. She moved to London to work where she learned editorial work as an assistant on the Westminster Review; her first book was published in 1860, when she was 40. Though she longed to settle down with an understanding husband and start a family, Eliot was thwarted by her growing notoriety as well by a difficult and high-strung personality prone to depression. She settled for a series of love affairs with married men who were attracted to her vast intelligence. In 1851, while working as a journalist, she met her match, the married writer George Henry Lewes. Three years later they began to openly live together, an act which severed for good any chance Eliot might have of being accepted into Victorian society. With Lewes, however, she found the kind of peace that allowed her to produce her novels. As he was a preeminent writer, people overlooked the unconventional status of his living arrangement in order to meet him, and enlarged her social and intellectual milieu.

George Eliot [pseudonym of Mary Anne or Marian Evans] (1819-1880) , English author wrote The Mill on the Floss "How can you talk so, Mr. Tulliver? She's too big a gellgone nine, and tall of her ageto have her hair cut short; an' there's her cousin Lucy's got a row o' curls round her head, an' not a hair out o' place. It seems hard as my sister Deane should have that pretty child; I'm sure Lucy takes more after me nor my own child does. Maggie, Maggie," continued the mother, in a tone of half-coaxing fretfulness, as this small mistake of nature entered the room, "where's the use o' my telling you to keep away from the water? You'll tumble in and be drownded some day, an' then you'll be sorry you didn't do as mother told you." Maggie's hair, as she threw off her bonnet, painfully confirmed her mother's accusation. Mrs. Tulliver, desiring her daughter to have a curled crop, "like other folks's children," had had it cut too short in front to be pushed behind the ears; and as it was usually straight an hour after it had been taken out of paper, Maggie was incessantly tossing her head to keep the dark, heavy locks out of her gleaming black eyes,an action which gave her very much the air of a small Shetland pony.—Book 1, ch. 2
