  • ASIN: Amazon.com Eliot's poetry ranges from the massively magisterial ( The Waste Land), to the playfully pleasant ( Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats). This volume of Eliot's poetry and plays offers the complete text of these and most all of Eliot's poetry, including the full text of Four Quartets. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Eliot exerted a profound influence on his contemporaries in the arts generally and this collection makes his genius clear. Book Description
Customer Reviews: Still Point of the Turning World I'm not at all rating this book five stars; that's my rating for T.S. Eliot's plays. This book was the typical library edition and has everything wrong with it: the cover of an old, wise Eliot (why not a young maverick one?), "Complete" in the title when it's not at all complete, big, heavy, hardback and way too literary looking for the passing reader to crack the cover. But look how much T.S. Eliot you already know. The Wasteland may be a maddingly obscure poem sequence built around a book by Jessie Weston, but Pete Townshend used the idea in a song: "Teenage Wasteland." You know from another song that T.S. Eliot, in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" said that life was measured out in coffee spoons. We all know that Old Possum's Book of Practical...plays out dramatically in a musical titled for the last word of that book...Cats. You could have tackled (or rather relaxed with) his most famous poem sequence, Four Quartets and the accompanying readers' guide by Thomas Howard.

T.S. Eliot (by E.O. Hoppe, 1919) Thomas Stearns Eliot (September 26, 1888 – January 4, 1965) was an American-born poet , dramatist, and literary critic whose works, such as "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," The Waste Land, and the epic Four Quartets, are considered defining achievements of twentieth century modernist poetry. Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and educated at Harvard , the Sorbonne , and Merton College, Oxford. He eventually settled in England , converting to the Anglican faith and obtaining British citizenship in 1927. Like fellow modernist poet and expatriate Ezra Pound , Eliot drew liberally on the literary canon, producing challenging, uncompromising poetry to express the complexities and calamities of the modern era. Perhaps more so than any other modernist, Eliot crafted poems that echo the beauty of classical poetry, yet at the same express the harrowing feelings of doubt and desolation in the aftermath of two world wars—feelings that would become part of the spiritual landscape in Eliot's time. The alienation informing his early works would give way to more hopeful themes following Eliot's conversion to Christianity. In 1928, to the consternation of the literati, Eliot pronounced himself a "classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and anglo-catholic in religion." In his later writings, Eliot explored the religious aspects of time and redemption, and came to see the Christian faith and European cultural tradition as necessary responses to the anomie he had explored in such groundbreaking works as

    Later poetry and plays.
Eliot's masterpiece is Four Quartets, which was issued as a book in 1943, though each "quartet" is a complete poem. The first of the quartets, "Burnt Norton," had appeared in the Collected Poems of 1936. It is a subtle meditation on the nature of time and its relation to eternity. On the model of this Eliot wrote three more poems, "East Coker" (1940), "The Dry Salvages" (1941), and "Little Gidding" (1942), in which he explored through images of great beauty and haunting power his own past, the past of the human race, and the meaning of human history. Each of the poems was self-subsistent; but when published together they were seen to make up a single work, in which themes and images recurred and were developed in a musical manner and brought to a final resolution. This work made a deep impression on the reading public, and even those who were unable to accept the poems' Christian beliefs recognized the intellectual integrity with which Eliot pursued his high theme, the originality of the form he had devised, and the technical mastery of his verse. This work led to the award to Eliot, in 1948, of the Nobel Prize for Literature. An outstanding example of Eliot's verse in Four Quartets From wrong to wrong the exasperated spirit Proceeds, unless restored by that refining fire

The idea of God, so far as it has been a high spiritual influence, is the ideal of a goodness entirely human. (Letter to the Hon. Mrs H. F. Ponsonby, 10 December 1874) We do not expect people to be deeply moved by what is not unusual. That element of tragedy which lies in the very fact of frequency, has not yet wrought itself into the coarse emotion of mankind; and perhaps our frames could hardly bear much of it. His complex early poems, employing myths, religious symbolism, and literary allusion, signified a break with 19th-century poetic traditions. Their models were the metaphysical poets Dante , the Jacobean dramatists, and French symbolists . Their meter ranged from the lyrical to the conversational. In his later poetry, notably Ash Wednesday (1930) and the Four Quartets Eliot was an extraordinarily influential critic, rejecting Romantic notions of unfettered originality and arguing for the impersonality of great art. His later criticism attempts to support Christian culture against what he saw as the empty and fragmented values of secularism. Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell, England. His mother was an accomplished pianist and a devout evangelical Christian. His father, who worked as a bank clerk, was also an artist, scholar, antiquarian, and collector of books and pictures. His rare book collection of more than 6,000 volumes included works in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish. Much of Browning's education came from his well-read father. It is believed that he was already proficient at reading and writing by the age of five. A bright and anxious student, Browning learned Latin, Greek, and French by the time he was fourteen. From fourteen to sixteen he was educated at home, attended to by various tutors in music, drawing, dancing, and horsemanship. At the age of twelve he wrote a volume of Byronic verse entitled
