"I suspect that Stephen Foster owed something to this well, this mystery, this sorrow. 'My Old Kentucky Home' makes you think so, at any rate. Something there suggests close acquaintance with my people..." - W. C. Handy, Father of the Blues "Well looka here / we are far from home-yeah, man!" - Louis Armstrong, "Old Folks At Home" (1939) Biography Stephen Collins Foster, the ninth of William B. and Eliza T. Foster's ten children (plus a son fathered by William before the marriage and later raised as their oldest child), was born July 4, 1826, in a white cottage high on the hillside above the Allegheny River in Lawrenceville, east of Pittsburgh. The tenth child died as an infant, leaving Stephen as the "baby" of the family to be indulged by older brothers and sisters. Foster's life has become part of American legend . One thread of the tale is that he detested school and so was poorly educated. In truth, as a young boy Stephen evinced more interest in music than in other subjects. But as the child of a middle-class family in an era before tax-supported public education, he variously was privately tutored, then schooled at private academies in Pittsburgh and in north-central Pennsylvania. He expressed a distaste for rote learning and recitation, but was an avid reader and eventually became a literate, well-educated person by the standards of his day. He was musically literate as well; he probably received some formal musical training from a German immigrant, Henry Kleber, an accomplished and versatile musician who eventually exerted a major influence on Pittsburgh's musical life as a performer, composer, music merchant, impresario, and teacher.

TREATING AIDS WITH NUTRITION by Harold D. Foster PhD University of Victoria British Columbia Canada (Reprinted with permission of the author) You may also wish to download, free of charge, Dr. Foster’s 2006 paper, The Successful Orthomolecular Treatment of AIDS: Accumulating Evidence from Africa: http://orthomolecular.org/library/jom/2006/pdf/2006-v21n03-p175.pdf WHAT REALLY CAUSES AIDS? http://www.hdfoster.com/publications (Editor's note: I urge all readers to read Dr. Foster's important book.) If HIV-1 causes AIDS by depressing body selenium, cysteine, glutamine and tryptophan then the way to treat this disorder is obviously diets enriched in these nutrients . But how much of each is required? What are the ideal levels of selenium, cysteine, glutamine, and tryptophan in the human body? AIDS AND SELENIUM A study by Shamberger and Willis discovered that healthy US individuals, between 50 and 71 years old, averaged 21.7 micrograms of selenium per 100 millilitres of blood. This compared with cancer patients of the same age range who were found to have only 16.2 micrograms per 100 millilitres. Furthermore, in a subsequent paper, the same authors described a comparison of selenium levels in the blood of people from 19 US cities. These were highest in

Stephen Collins Foster (born 4 Jul 1826; died 13 Jan 1864) was the son of William Barcley Foster (born: 7 Sep 1779; died 27 Jul 1855) and Elisa Clayland [Tomlinson] Foster (born: Jan 1788; died Jan 1855) who were married in 1807. He had three sisters (Charlotte Susanna, Ann Eliza, and Henrietta) and four brothers (James [who died in infancy], Dunning McNair, Morrison and William). In 1850, he married Jane Denny McDowell. Among his most popular songs are: Oh! Susanna De Camptown Races Old Folks at Home [aka Swanee River My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night! AIDS and Vitamins Vitamins and AIDS
Home
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS FIGHT AIDS Question: What's the difference between a decade of AIDS drug research and a truckload of Pentagon five-hundred-dollars-apiece hammers? Answer: The public has received more honest value from the hammers. It's been known since 1993 that nutrition stops AIDS better than any pharmaceutical drug. Yes, fully 16 years ago, a Johns Hopkins study (1) demonstrated that supplements slow AIDS, and even help halt it. The seven year long study of 281 HIV positive men showed that those taking vitamins had only about ONE HALF as many new AIDS outbreaks as those not taking supplements. Imagine: a 50 percent reduction in AIDS cases just from vitamins! The real wonder is that the dosages used were so small: only 715 milligrams of vitamin C a day, and about 5 times the US RDA of the B-vitamins and beta carotene. Larger, orthomolecular amounts would almost certainly save still more lives. Even so, Tang et al (1993) concluded that "The highest levels of total intake (from food and supplements) of vitamins C and B1 and niacin were associated with a significantly decreased progression rate to AIDS (as were) vitamin A, niacin, and zinc." At about the same time, Jean Carper's nationally syndicated column (February 24, 1993) reported that "heavy doses of beta carotene pills, 180 mg a day taken for a month, boosted the immune functioning of HIV-infected patients." If you are therefore thinking that carrot juice may have more punch against AIDS than previously thought, you may be right.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition
Thanks to Nutrition Science News for the use of this article!
by Patrick Quillin, Ph.D., R.D.
"I'm sorry, but you have cancer." These words from a doctor introduce fear into the heart of any patient. The good news is that supportive nutrition therapy can significantly increase cancer patients' quality and length of life and improve their chances for a complete remission. Better yet, a healthy lifestyle that includes a wholesome diet, sufficient exercise, positive attitude and toxin avoidance can prevent up to 90 percent of cancers. Now for the bad news. Conventional medicine does not have a high success rate with the disease. By the turn of this century, cancer will become the leading cause of death in America. During the past 26 years, NCI spent $37 billion in research with a resulting increase in cancer incidence and deaths. Clearly, medicine cannot produce a "magic bullet" to cure cancer while patients go on living on soft drinks, pollutants and stress. On December 23, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon confidently declared a "war on cancer" and promised a cure by the 1976 Bicentennial. However, as late as 1991, a group of 60 noted physicians and scientists called a press conference and made the following statement: "The cancer establishment confuses the public with repeated claims that we are winning the war on cancer. ... Our ability to treat and cure most cancers has not materially improved." [ ] In this article, I will briefly explore the reasons for failure in combating cancer and give rational directions to improve outcomes for the 2.5 million cancer patients being treated in America today.
