Martin Freeman plays the likeable Tim
By Leigh Mytton
BBC News Online Martin Freeman has become a cult hero thanks to his role as hapless Tim in award-winning comedy The Office. The show's fans undoubtedly breathed a huge sigh of relief at the end of the first series, when Tim failed to carry out his threat to leave Slough paper merchants Wernham Hogg. Tim's decision - prompted by his promotion to senior sales clerk - means he is back to torment Gareth, flirt with Dawn and laugh at David Brent's jokes for a second series of cringe-inducing office antics. Tim is the most likeable Wernham Hogg staff member and Freeman turns out to be a nice bloke too. He is talkative, witty and modest. The sort of person you can imagine having a laugh with down the pub. I ask him where he got the inspiration for Tim. "He's not a million miles from me," he explains. "I based him half on myself and half on one of my brothers, who is a quiet bloke, but what he does say is insightful, funny and sarcastic."

    Tim for a change
In The Office, Martin Freeman seduced the receptionist, and the critics. Stephanie Merritt asks him where he's going next 'Hello Martin. Martin, how nice to meet you. How are you, Martin?' All the way up the several flights of stairs to his agent's offices, I practise not calling Martin Freeman Tim. I've mentioned to a number of people today that I'm going to see him and without exception they've said, 'Who?' Then you say 'Tim from The Office' and the response is a squeal of delighted recognition. Men say, 'Yeah, I like him,' in a way that suggests they know it's perfectly safe and non-gay to say so, and women say 'ahh, Tim,' with that 'bless' cadence. Tim, arguably the most likeable character in the most significant British sitcom since Fawlty Towers, already has an established place both in the Comedy Hall of Fame and in the national consciousness; an Everyman romantic hero for the modern age. Who didn't cheer when Tim finally roused himself from his inertia to make one last exquisitely judged bid for the love of his lady and was rewarded with a happy ending, and who can say how many latent office romances may have been nudged into life by his example?

Ven. William Freeman
A priest and martyr , b. at Manthorp near York , c. 1558; d. at Warwick, 13 August, 1595. His parents were recusants , though he conformed outwardly for some time to the religion of the country. Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford , he took his degree as B.A. in 1581, then lived for some years in London , where he witnessed the martyrdom of Edward Stransham in 1586. Strongly impressed with this example, he left England and was ordained priest in 1587 at Reims . Returning to England in 1589, he worked for six years on the borders of Warwickshire, and in his interesting life many persons are mentioned who were contemporaries or friends of Shakespeare . In January, 1595, a special commission was sent down to Stratford-on-Avon to search the house of Mrs. Heaths who bad engaged his services as tutor to her son. William Freeman was arrested, and spent seven months in Drison. He denied his priesthood , but also refused all friendly offers to escape, not wishing to lose his opportunity of martyrdom . Owing to the treachery of a fellow-prisoner
