Z Emile Gaboriau Biography Emile Gaboriau (November 9, 1833 - September 28, 1873), a French mystery writer, novelist, and journalist, one of the pioneers of modern detective fiction. Gaboriau's first book of the genre, L'Affaire Lerouge (1866) introduced an amateur detective, who works logically. In the same book appeared also a young policeman named Lecoq, the hero in three of Gaboriau's detective novels. Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned policeman, François Vidocq (1775-1857), whose memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact.
Gaboriau gained a huge following, but when Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes, Lecoq's international fame declined.

in the hevens—JOSH BILLINGS Emile Gaboriau, the son of a notary, was born at Saujon, France, in 1835 and died in Paris in 1873. He was a carrier's clerk and then served in the cavalry before beginning to write for the minor newspapers. Later he developed into one of the best-known French writers of detective stories, featuring especially the detective "Lecoq." His first success was "L'Affaire Lerouge," which appeared as a serial in Le Pays in 1866. It was translated into English and published under the titles "The Widow Lerouge" and "The Lerouge Affair." Under a new disguise it appeared as "A Desperate Deed" in Dick's English Novels, London, and in the Waverley Library, and credited to Erskine Boyd, an English writer of the 1870's. Dr. John B. Williams, a popular American author, also appropriated the story but gave it a New York setting and called it "Who Was Guilty? or, The Harlem Mystery." Gaboriau followed his first success with "Le Dossier 113" (Englished as "File 113") in 1867, and "Le Crime d'Orcival" (The Orcival Mystery) in 1868. He also wrote "Monsieur Lecoq" (1869), "Les Escalves de Paris" (1869), "La Vie Infernale" (1870), "L'Argent des Autres" (1874), and "La Degringolade" (1876).

Gaboriau was born in the small town of Saujon Charente-Maritime . He became a secretary to Paul Féval , and after publishing some novels and miscellaneous writings, found his real gift in L'Affaire Lerouge (1866). The book, which was Gaboriau's first detective novel, introduced an amateur detective. It also introduced a young police officer named Monsieur Lecoq , who was the hero in three of Gaboriau's later detective novels. Monsieur Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775-1857), whose memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq , mixed fiction and fact.

Émile Gaboriau (1832-1873) French 19th century journalist and writer of detective novels of the roman policier genre. Influenced by Poe (1809-1849). Eugène François Vidocq's (1775-1857) Vidocq; Personal Memoirs of the First Great Detective (1828) partly inspired Monsieur Lecoq, (1869) who in turn inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 's Sherlock Holmes. Émile Gaboriau was born 9 November 1832 in the village of Saujon, Charente-Martime, France. He was the son of Charles-Gabriel Gaboriau, a minor public official and Marguerite-Stéphanie Gaboriau (née Magistrel). He had a sister named Amélie. Gaboriau attended the Tarasconsur-Rhône secondary school where he met Alphonse Millaud whose uncle would later publish his serial stories in Le Soleil . In 1850 Gaboriau became the apprentice of a notary but didn't enjoy clerical work. He joined the military as second-class infantryman of the Fifth Regiment in 1852. In 1855 he moved to Paris, and while a ghost writer for Paul Féval he also wrote for the satirical newspapers
