In 1832, the Duke of Newcastle was looking for a Conservative Party candidate for his Newark constituency. Although a nomination borough, Newark had been spared in the 1832 Reform Act . Sir John Gladstone was a friend of the Duke and suggested his son would make a good MP.
Two years after entering the House of Commons as MP for Newark, Sir Robert Peel , the Prime Minister, appointed William Gladstone as his junior lord of the Treasury. The following year he was promoted to under-secretary for the colonies. Gladstone lost office when Peel resigned in 1835 but returned to the government when the Whigs were forced out of power in August, 1841. Gladstone now became vice-president of the board of trade and in 1843 was promoted to the post of president. In 1844 Gladstone was responsible for the

William Ewart Gladstone 1809 - 1898
Famous Victorian reforming British Prime Minister who served four terms as and was MP for Greenwich. William Ewart Gladstone, the fourth son of Sir John Gladstone, was born in Liverpool on 29th December, 1809. Gladstone was a MP and a successful Liverpool merchant. William was educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford. At the Oxford Union Debating Society Gladstone developed a reputation as a fine orator. At university Gladstone was a Tory and denounced Whig proposals for parliamentary reform. Famous as Disraeli's rival and for their spirited debates, Gladstone had a long and distinguished career in public service which began in 1832 when he entered Parliament as a Tory (Conservative). Serving until 1895, except for a one year absence in 1846, he served in numerous governments beginning with Peel's ministry in junior capacities. Gladstone's first major office was that of President of the Board of Trade (Minister of Industry and Commerce) in Peel's second ministry (1841-46). He was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Minister of Finance) in Aberdeen's government, cutting duties and attempting to abolish income tax. His efforts failed due to the need for funds to carry on the Crimean War. He also served in Palmerston's second ministry (1859-65) again effecting tax reductions. When Palmerston died, Gladstone stayed on as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Russell through 1866. In 1867, he followed Russell as leader of the Liberal Party.

Technical College Please select a Panel below to view the topic content Introduction to the Department and the Subjects we offer The Technical College Gladstone is a campus of Gladstone State High School. The College aims to address recognised nation-wide skills shortages now and in the future by providing an alternative education and training pathway for year 11 and 12 students. The Technical College provides opportunities for students to gain a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship and their Queensland Certificate of Education. Currently the College has student-apprentices in Automotive, Building and Construction, Commercial Cookery, Electro-technology, Engineering, Hairdressing, Horticulture and Business Administration. How we deliver courses and how our assessment supports and demonstrates student learning The TCG model has four key points of difference to any other model of education and training for Australian School Based Apprenticeships (AsbA’s) in Central Queensland.  These are:
  • The block (two week) rotational model. The students work (or complete work experience if unplaced) for their employer for two weeks as an apprentice/trainee.  They then return to the College Campus to study their school subjects for two (2) weeks. Students study English or English Communication, Prevocational Maths or Maths A and a Certificate II in Business, IT and Workplace Practices.  Students complete this cycle for approximately forty-one (41) weeks out of the year. Student-Apprentices attend their RTO for approximately seven (7) weeks per year studying towards the qualification for their Apprenticeship.

Glaberman, Martin (1918-2001) Gladstone, William Ewart (1809-1898) Liberal leader of merchant origin. First a Tory, then supporter of Peel and Free Trade, eventually joining the Liberal Party whose leader he became in 1866. As Prime Minister 1868-74 he brought in some reforms in the army, education and trade union rights. His second government enacted the Third Reform Act in 1884, giving the vote to most rural workers; his third government, of 1886, fell because of his split with Chamberlain and the Unionists over Irish Home Rule. His last government, 1892-94, made another unsuccessful attempt to break the alliance of the House of Lords, Chamberlain's Unionists and English and Irish Tories against Home Rule. In opposition, he agitated against Disraeli's condoning of Turkish oppression in the Balkans and other excesses, although his own foreign policy was imperialist, with campaigns in Egypt and South Africa. Glass, Frank (1901-1988) Cecil Frank Glass, though born in England (Warwickshire) was brought up in South Africa when his family emigrated there in late 1908 or 1909. He was a member of the Industrial Socialist League that organised Coloured workers in Cape Town and joined the South African Communist Party when it was formed or very soon afterwards. He broke from their political positions in 1925 and adapted the positions of the Left Opposition in 1928. New International He went back to China but increasing difficulties and the Japanese invasion forced him to leave on the last ship from Shanghai before the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941. Via the Philippines and Australia he got back to the USA. He joined the American SWP and wrote extensively on China under the names of Ralph Graham and John Liang for their press. In the late 1940s he moved to the West Coast, Los Angeles and died there in 1988 after some years of bad health.
