    The Wheel of Life
    CHAPTER V
BETWEEN LAURA AND GERTY Did he possess the strength as well as the love that she needed? Adams asked himself a little later as he walked back under the stars. He saw her as he had just left herwan, despairing; so bloodless that the light seemed shining through her features, and then he remembered the radiant smile which she had lost, the glorious womanhood obscured now by humiliation. An assurance, in which there was almost exultation, flooded his thoughts, and he was aware that the passion he felt for her had been suddenly strengthened by an emotion of equal powerby the longing born in his heart to afford protection to whatever suffered within his sight. Never for an instant, since he had entered the room where she retreated before him, had he doubted either his appointed mission or his power of renewal. His whole experience, he understood now, had directed him to this hour which he had not foreseen, and the worldly success for which he had once struggled meant to him at last only that he might bring hope where there was failure. Even Connieher love, her tragic history, her pitiable reliance upon him at the endshowed to him in the aspect of a human revelationfor his fuller understanding of Connie had confirmed him in the patience by which alone he might win back Laura to the happiness which she had lost.

Glasgow, Ellen (Anderson Gholson)
(b. April 22, 1873, Richmond, Va., U.S.d. Nov. 21, 1945, Richmond), American novelist who realistically depicted life in her native Virginia. She received the Pulitzer Prize in 1942. Glasgow came from a prosperous and socially prominent family. She was irregularly schooled because of delicate health but otherwise lived the life of a Southern belle except for her intense seriousness about becoming a novelist of stature. Her first two novels were apprentice work, revealing a narrative energy and a determination to shock. In The Voice of the People (1900) she began a planned social history of Virginia from 1850. The finest of the five novels she produced for the project was Virginia (1913), which covered the years 1884 to 1912 and provided a tragicomic portrait of a girl groomed for a mindless way of life then on the point of extinction. Glasgow first gained serious critical attention with Barren Ground (1925), a story of the Piedmont countryside of Virginia. She then published a trilogy of ironic novels of manners set in Richmond (disguised as "Queenborough"): The Romantic Comedians They Stooped to Folly (1929), and
