Godwin, William From New World Encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Previous (William Gladstone) Next (William Golding) William Godwin William Godwin (March 3, 1756 – April 7, 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism , and one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. Godwin is most famous for two books that he published within the space of a year: An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, an Attack on Political Institutions, and Things as They Are and The Adventures of Caleb Williams , which attacked aristocratic privilege, and was also one of the first mystery thrillers. Based on the success of both, Godwin featured prominently in the radical circles of London in the 1790s. Godwin held the optimistic view that every individual, as a rational being, had the capacity to achieve an elevated understanding of moral and political truth, which would then guide him to act for the greatest good. He believed that any form of government, or even of mutual cooperation with others, impinged on the individual’s ability to freely exercise this judgment. Godwin’s ideal was a society with no government at all, where all individuals would be motivated by their understanding of truth. From 1778 to 1783 he acted as minister of various congregations near London; but his theological views having undergone important changes, he resigned his pastorate, and devoted himself to a literary career. His first work, a series of historical sketches in the form of sermons, failed. He then found employment as one of the principal writers in the New Annual Register , and became otherwise prominent as an advocate of political and social reform. Many of his views were peculiar and extreme, and even tended, if fully carried out in practice, to subvert morality; but they were propounded and supported by their author with a whole-hearted belief in their efficacy for the regeneration of society: and the singular circumstances of his connection with and ultimate marriage to Mary Wollstonecraft showed at least that he had the courage of his opinions.

By his own admission, their author “scarcely in any instance contributed a page to any periodical miscellany” (Thoughts on Man), most of the essays appearing in three separate volumes: The Enquirer (1797), Thoughts on Man (1831), and a posthumous, rather cranky collection of religious essays usually designated as Essays (1873). The rest serve as prefaces to the novels, the most notable being that to Caleb Williams (1794), in which the organic process of creation, as distinct from a priori rules of composition, is carefully traced by the novelist from a psychological perspective that anticipates the organicist critiques written by Romantic poets and essayists in the following decades. Even so, like so much else he wrote, Godwin’s essays are largely footnotes—of amplification and qualification, and eventually of contradiction—to the work for which he was best known, the classic tract of philosophic anarchism, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice (1793). observes that “there is a vivacity, and, if he may be permitted to say it, a richness, in the hints struck out in conversation, that are with difficulty attained in any other method.”
