Emma Goldman Papers Project: University of California at Berkeley
Maintained by University of California at Berkeley. Emma Goldman (1869-1940) stands as a major figure in the history of American radicalism and feminism. An influential and well-known anarchist of her day, Goldman was an early advocate of free speech, birth control, women's equality and independence, union organization, and the eight-hour work day. Her criticism of mandatory conscription of young men into the military during World War I led to a two-year imprisonment, followed by her deportation in 1919. For the rest of her life until her death in 1940, she continued to participate in the social and political movements of her age, from the Russian Revolution to the Spanish civil war...

(b. June 27, 1869, Kaunas, Lithuania, Russian Empired. May 14, 1940, Toronto, Ont., Can.), international anarchist who conducted leftist activities in the United States from about 1890 to 1917. By 1889 Goldman had espoused anarchism and had moved to New York City, where she became associated with the Russian anarchist Alexander Berkman . In 1892 he was sentenced to a 22-year prison term for his attempted assassination of the industrialist Henry Clay Frick during the Homestead steel strike in Pittsburgh, Pa. Goldman continued her activities as an anarchist lecturer despite one year in prison for inciting a riot in New York City in 1893. After Berkman's early release in 1906 she resumed her association with him. They carried on anarchist activities, publishing the anarchist magazine Mother Earth, until 1917, when they were arrested for obstructing the military draft and served two years in prison. They were deported to Russia in 1919. Although Goldman had previously favoured the Soviet government, her stay in Russia disillusioned her. She left Russia in 1921 and went to England and later to Canada and Spain (during the Spanish Civil War). She wrote My Disillusionment in Russia (1923) and her autobiography

ANARCHISM:
WHAT IT REALLY STANDS FOR
ANARCHY.
Ever reviled, accursed, ne'er understood,
Thou art the grisly terror of our age.
"Wreck of all order," cry the multitude,
"Art thou, and war and murder's endless rage."
O, let them cry. To them that ne'er have striven
The truth that lies behind a word to find,
To them the word's right meaning was not given.
They shall continue blind among the blind.
But thou, O word, so clear, so strong, so pure,
Thou sayest all which I for goal have taken. I give thee to the future! Thine secure When each at least unto himself shall waken. Comes it in sunshine? In the tempest's thrill? I cannot tellbut it the earth shall see! I am an Anarchist! Wherefore I will Not rule, and also ruled I will not be! JOHN HENRY MACKAY.

Liberty will not descend to a people, a people must raise themselves to liberty Emma Goldman was an anarchist and radical who worked for the causes of free speech, women's rights, birth control and an eight-hour workday. Born in Kovno, Russia in 1869, Goldman came to America in 1885. She became a political activist as a result of the Haymarket incident in 1886. She wrote, spoke publicly, and edited Mother Earth . Police attempted to implicate her in the assassination of President McKinley, but were unable to obtain any evidence. For speaking out against World War I, Goldman was imprisoned for two years, and in 1919, exiled from the United States. She died in Toronto in 1940. As she had earlier expressed a wish to be buried near the Haymarket monument, her body was brought back to the United States with the permission of Immigration. The monument incorrectly gives her date of death as May 14, 1939 - she actually died on May 14, 1940, and was buried here on May 17.

Emma Goldman: Too Radical for 2003? Index to Etexts on Women's History Propagandism is not, as some suppose, a "trade," because nobody will follow a "trade" at which you may work with the industry of a slave and die with the reputation of a mendicant. The motives of any persons to pursue such a profession must be different from those of trade, deeper than pride, and stronger than interest. GEORGE JACOB HOLYOAKE.
