The artwork is an aquarelle, with thin, precise, detailed lines. It's no wonder he received numerous awards for his previous effort, Julien Boisvert, a contemporary take on the Tintin character type. In Wind in the Willows, Plessix breathes life into Mole, Rat, and Toad (of Toad Hall) as they picnic on the riverbank, indulge in Toad's latest fad, and get lost in Wild Wood. The pacing is masterful: each panel lingers just long enough to make you appreciate the simple pleasures of life. This review refers to ISBN 1561631965.

Grahame was born on 8 March 1859 in Edinburgh Scotland but in early childhood, after his mother died and his father began to drink heavily, he moved with his younger sister to live with his grandmother on the banks of the River Thames in the Berkshire village of Cookham in southern England . He was an outstanding pupil at St Edward's School in Oxford and wanted to attend Oxford University but was not allowed to do so by his guardian on grounds of cost. Instead he was sent to work at the Bank of England in , and rose through the ranks until retiring as its Secretary in 1908 due to ill health. In addition to ill health, Grahame's retirement was precipitated in 1903 by a strange, possibly political, shooting incident at the bank.

Mole thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river beforethis sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again." Such is the cautious, agreeable Mole's first introduction to the river and the Life Adventurous. Emerging from his home at Mole End one spring, his whole world changes when he hooks up with the good-natured, boat-loving Water Rat, the boastful Toad of Toad Hall, the society- hating Badger who lives in the frightening Wild Wood, and countless other mostly well-meaning creatures.

GRAHAME, Kenneth. The wind in the willows. A BBC Radio 4 Full-Cast dramatization. 2 cds. 2 hrs. BBC Audiobooks America. 2006. 978-0-7927-4703-1. $39.95. Vinyl; plot, author notes. JSA * This full-cast, beautifully dramatized version of the classic children's book features accomplished BBC actors (Richard Briefs as Rat, Nickolas Grace as Toad and Adrian Scarborough as Mole, with Alan Bennett as the narrator) and beautifully done music and sound effects. Both adults and children, whether new to the story or not, will be captivated. The story follows Toad, Rat, and Mole in their adventures, with, of course, most of the drama stemming from Toad's delusions about motorcars and his supposedly elevated place in the world. The development of the friendship between Rat and Mole is charming, and the actors portraying them are warm and funny. Regional British accents differentiate the animals, and there is an excellent children's chorus appropriately placed in the story. Flawless and fascinating, this wonderful production would be an asset to any library collection. Melody Moxley, Admin. Svcs. from The Golden Age (Note: Kenneth Grahame's mother, Elizabeth, died in 1864 before the future author of The Wind in the Willows was five years old. Afterwards his father, Cunningham Grahame, abandoned his four childrenHelen, Thomas, Kenneth, and Rolandleaving them in the care of their formidable maternal grandmother, Granny Ingles, who lived in a rambling old house called The Mount, at Cookham Dene in Berkshire. It was here that Kenneth learned to love nature, distrust the "Olympians" as he called the adults in his life (numerous aunts and uncles), and unknowingly pile up the experiences that would later form the basis for the stories in his collection, The Golden Age The Golden Age concerns a group of orphaned children in much the same circumstances as the young Grahames. The stories are loosely connected and easily stand on their own. They are told by an unnamed Narrator, obviously Grahame's alter ego , who looks back on his boyhood years with amusement, affection, and a certain sadness that, as Grahame put it, "the gate had been shut" to the garden of childhood forever.)

Kenneth Grahame (1859-1952) , Scottish essayist and author wrote The Wind in the Willows Toad talked big about all he was going to do in the days to come, while stars grew fuller and larger all around them, and a yellow moon, appearing suddenly and silently from nowhere in particular, came to keep them company and listen to their talk. At last they turned in to their little bunks in the cart; and Toad, kicking out his legs, sleepily said, "Well, good night, you fellows! This is the real life for a gentleman! Talk about your old river!" Ch. 2 Mr. Toad, Ratty, Mr. Badger, and Mole are among the many creatures and characters who inhabit Grahame's version of Victorian era England. He weaves their riverbank life and many adventures in magical yet universally appealing style. Grahame was well-esteemed during his career with the Bank of England, which had started in 1879 and culminated in his being appointed Secretary at the age of thirty-nine. During these almost twenty years he also grew to be a respected writer, producing numerous essays, articles, and short stories for various publications. The Wind in the Willows was popular when first released, praised by American President Theodore Roosevelt, and established Grahame's career as a children's author. The year 1930 saw its first successful adaptation for the stage as

    Biography
British writer who called himself "a Sunday writer" as he worked for the Bank of England for his vocation from 1879. Orphaned early, he was raised by his grandmom and educated at St. Edward's before becoming a clerk in the bank. He rose rapidly to bank secretary in 1898, a position he kept until his health broke down in 1907, forcing his retirement in 1908. In 1903, a man robbed the bank at gunpoint, threatening Grahame's life. Married to Elspeth Thomson in 1899, Grahame had one son the following year, Alastair, who was killed in a train accident at age 20. He published three books, the first in 1893, "Pagan Papers." He was remembered most fondly for "The Wind in the Willows," written for his son and published in 1908. He also wrote "the Golden Age," a volume of essays and a posthumous collection. Died 7/06/1932, Pangbourne, England.
