Presidential Reflections U. S. Grant has provided us with a very clear understanding of what brings a man of character to a life of consequence, unlike the individuals who become president and think they are the important influence of our lives. God forbid that we think Obama or any other individual is more important than common sense and logical thinking.

An outstanding horseman, he was unable to join the cavalry after graduating 21st in a class of 39. He joined the 4th Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant and served as a regimental quartermaster during the Mexican War
After the war he was stationed on the Pacific Coast. It was during this period he developed a drink problem. This resulted in his being forced to resign from the United States Army in 1854.
Grant worked as a firewood peddler, real estate salesman and as a farmer near St. Louis , before becoming a clerk in his family's tannery and leather store in Galenta, Illinois.
An opponent of slavery , on the outbreak of the Civil War , Grant offered his services to the Union Army . He was commissioned as colonel of the 21st Illinois Volunteers. Even before he had engaged the Confederate forces, Grant was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general and placed in charge of the District of South-East Missouri.
On 4th September General Leonidas Polk and a large Confederate Army moved into Kentucky and began occupying high ground overlooking the Ohio River. Grant now moved his troops into Kentucky and quickly gained control of the mouths of the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers as they flowed into the Ohio. The

About Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant Ohio, on April 27th, 1822 to a modest middle class family. His father worked as a tanner, thus he developed a proficiency in the handling of equestrians, which was one of his only meritable traits during his appointment to West Point. He graduated in 1843 ranking 21st out of 39 graduating students. Grant then served in the Mexican War. Although he served effectively with Zachary Taylor's army at Monterey and with Winfeild Scott's army in the campaign for Mexico city, where he won two brevets for meritorious conduct, he detested the war. Grant once said of the Mexican war, "one of the most unjust ever waged on a weaker country by a stronger."
After the war, Grant married Julia Dent, the daughter of a rich plantation owner in Missouri, on August 22, 1848. Grant was initially assigned to garrison duty in the central northeast United States in the Great Lakes region. He was transferred to the Pacific Northwest where he has unable to have his family with him. In 1854 he resigned from the military after rumors of drink clouded his name. He returned to the east only to fail in one business venture after another. In the April of 1861, Grant was clerking in his brothers leather shop, in Galena Illinois.
Despite any of his acquaintances at West Point, he was unable to obtain a position on General

Little Known Facts about Ulysses S. Grant
by Diane Meives
As the hero of the Civil War, and as President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant won fame and notoriety. Few people, however, know the personal side of the man. Listed below are a few facts about Grant that are generally unknown. Although General Grant was reported to be a small man, in actuality he was five feet, eight inches tall. This was above average for the mid-nineteenth century man who was about five feet, seven inches. General Grant did not start life as a small baby, however, weighing ten and three quarters pounds at birth. Unlike many of his predecessors who were born in log cabins, Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in a small frame cottage along the banks of the Ohio River in a small village named Point Pleasant, to a leather tanner, Jesse Grant and his wife Hannah Simpson Grant on April 27, 1822. Although named Hiram, his family called him by his middle name Ulysses, or Lyss for short. At the age of seven, young Ulysses nearly drowned while fishing in White Oak Creek, near his home in Georgetown, Ohio. His friend and fishing partner, nine year old Daniel Ammen, reached down and pulled him to safety after a thorough dunking. At nine years of age young Ulysses was so adept at breaking horses to pace that many farmers in the region came to him for assistance in training their animals. His intense love for horses continued throughout his life. He set a high jump record at West Point that lasted for more than twenty-five years.
