Marcet and Emanuel Haldeman-Julius
Marcet and Emanuel Haldeman-Julius were called "the Henry Fords of publishing" and the parents of the paperback book. Emanuel Julius was born in Philadelphia in 1889, the son of Jewish emigrants who fled Russia to escape religious persecution. As a boy, Emanuel, too, was harassed for being Jewish, resulting in a disdain for all religion as an adult. After leaving school at the age of 15, he worked at a variety of menial jobs. All the while, he read voraciously. Because literature and pamphlets produced by the socialists were inexpensive, Julius read them and became convinced of their truth. Ultimately he found jobs as a correspondent for socialist newspapers in several cities. In 1915 he was invited to move to Girard and write for Appeal to Reason , then the largest socialist periodical in the country. While in Girard he married Marcet Haldeman, a feminist in her own right. She was the daughter of Henry and Alice Addams Haldman, one of town's foremost families. Marcet's mother was the sister of the famous reformer Jane Addams. Following their marriage, Marcet and Emanuel decided to combine their surnames, as a demonstration of their commitment to equality, and they became Marcet and Emanual Haldeman-Julius. The couple moved to Illinois but they returned and in 1919 purchased

Debs Collection:
Big Blue Books
(Uncataloged Collection)
All but four of the titles listed below were received as gifts by an anonymous donor in August 2003 and January 2004. Only copies of three of the titles have been previously cataloged and are part of pamphlet holdings of the Debs Collection. When these items have been cataloged, this list will be retired. Meanwhile, inquiries and corrections are welcome. Big Blue Books are largely reprints of Little Blue Books in a more agreeable format. Correspondingly, their cost was greater. There was great latitude in how these titles advertised themselves, sometimes as part of other series and sometimes lacking information clearly indicating the item was a Big Blue Book. Additionally, not all Big Blue Books were numbered. For more information about Blue Books read the introduction to the page on Little Blue Books. For even more information or to get a current listing of known Little Blue Books, visit the Little Blue Books Index provided by the Axe Library Special Collections Department of the Pittsburg State University (Kansas) Library.

    Chapter I
    INTELLECTUAL SNOBBERY
I open a collection of essays devoted to the Jewish problem. It has been edited by Ludwig Lewisohn, a very able gentleman who, to his own and to his people's misfortune, was bitten, mid-way in his career, by the bug of old-fashioned religion and has been spewing virus ever since. My present quarrel, however, is not with Lewisohn, or with the anthology of Messianism that he has labeled 'Rebirth.' It is with one of his entrants, Maurice Samuel. Mr. Samuel shares, if rather less conspicuously than Mr. Lewisohn, the Messianic volubility that seems to attack so many publicists, whatever their Cause. Like Lewisohn, too, he exhibits often a verbal auto-intoxication. He gets drunk on printer's ink. He becomes a prey to his facility with words and is led, down the slippery path of epigram, into folly. Thus I come upon a statement by Mr. Samuel that refers to Emanuel Haldeman-Julius. It occurs in the extract labeled 'Jewry and The World Mob.' With the general argument of Mr. Samuel I am not here concerned. It is such an easy thing to call Irving Berlin "the one-finger Mozart of ragtime," and Lewis Browne "the Elinor Glyn of religion," all in the strange illusion that Jews writing in a Jewish homeland for a Jewish audience will become 10-finger Mozarts and second Isaiah. Equally easy is it to speak of "Haldeman-Julius, who has spread culture wider and thinner than any man before."

Please call or email the department with requests for this material prior to your visit. Historical Note: Emanuel Haldeman-Julius (1888-1951) gained recognition for publishing the "Little Blue Books" series, which made a wide variety of books (including works of literature, information manuals, collections, etc.) available for a price far lower than usual. The publishing company later began publishing larger books as well, some called "Big Blue Books" but some belonging to different series like Joseph McCabe's "Key to Culture" series or the "Digests" in which literary works were condensed and discussed. The company still maintained its Socialist political views, and placed great importance on the exosure of knowledge and information to as broad an audience as possible. Additional historical information about the Haldeman-Julius publications can be found on the Haldeman-Julius.org
