Emanuel and Marcet Haldeman-Julius
Biography Mr and Mrs. Haldeman-Julius were a couple who shared equally in the writing and publication of many essays, short stories, newspaper publications, and even a few short novels. They lived during an era of great social enlightenment that succedeed the Communist Revolution in Russia and The Great War. This era was the first in history to include women on equal ground. E. Haldeman-Julius was born in Philadelphia to Jewish immigrant parents from Odessa, Russia. Emanuel Julius joined the Socialist Party as a teenager. Although not formally educated, he nonetheless became a successful writer for the leading Socialist newspapers in New York, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Los Angeles. However, he left these cities for the small town of Girard, Kansas

Defending the Home: Ossian Sweet and the Struggle Against Segregation in 1920s Detroit
Victoria W. Wolcott
Brown v. Board of Education twenty-fold Parmallee v. Morris , a legal precedent that stood until 1948. Thus, neighborhood improvement associations and realtors had the legal right to draft contracts that excluded persons on the basis of race. As a result, African Americans who tried to move into white neighborhoods often faced not only mob violence but legal barriers. Buchanan v. Warley Corrigan v. Buckley in the U.S. Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn a residential covenant in Washington, D.C. Having addressed housing segregation sanctioned by the state and by private agreement, they hoped to win a third battle against segregation through mob violence by defending the eleven accused in Detroit. Thus, thirty years before Brown v. Board of Education , the NAACP was directly challenging both legal and extra-legal attempts to draw a color line in American towns and cities. After deliberating four hours on 19 May 1926, the jury found Henry Sweet not guilty, and the charges were eventually dropped for the remaining ten defendants. African Americans across the country had finally gotten the victory they had been seeking.

Historical Notes: Chronology of Important Events
A sobering perspective can be gained through familiarity with the timelines and history that encompass our collections. It is with this thought in mind we have assembled this working chronology of important events surrounding the Haldeman-Julius family and its pocket series publications. If you think there's an important event we've overlooked please let us know! Year Day Event June (Anna) Marcet Haldeman born in Girard, Kansas, USA Emanuel Haldeman Julius' parents, David Zolajefsky and Elizabeth Zamustin, arrive in the United States of America after emigrating from Russia. Family changes their last name to Julius shortly after arrival. July Emanuel Julius born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Publisher J. A. Wayland moves the Appeal to Reason publishing effort from Kansas City, Missouri to Girard, Kansas. Emanuel Julius, age 15, buys a phamphlet edition of Oscar Wilde's The Ballad of Reading Gaol at Nicholas L. Brown's bookshop at 5th and Pine Street in Philadelphia. He reads it cover to cover in the park across the street, and speculates "how wondeful it would be if thousands of such booklets could be made available."
