Main
Hamilton, Alexander
A dropout from King’s College (later Columbia University), Alexander Hamilton was nonetheless a New York success story of the highest order. After marrying the well–connected Elizabeth Schuyler, he took up residence on Wall Street (at No. 58), practiced law, established the Bank of New York, helped ratify the Constitution of the United States, wrote much of the Federalist Papers, and in 1789 became the first Secretary of the Treasury. He was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr that took place in Weehauken, New Jersey, on July 11, 1804, and he was buried in the crowded graveyard of Trinity Church.

Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was born in January 11, 1755 on the West Indies island of Nevis (an island held by the British), the illegitimate child of James Hamilton and Rachel Faucett Lavien. Rachel died in 1768. At twelve, Alexander became a clerk and apprentice at a counting house. At fifteen, he was left in charge of the business. The Royal Danish-American Gazette published Hamilton's description of a hurricane on August 30th, 1772, spurring his family and friends to provide the means for Hamilton to be educated. Alexander went to a grammar school in Elizabethtown, New Jersey and then studied at King's College (now Columbia) in 1774, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in only one year. "A feeble executive implies a feeble execution of the government. A feeble execution is but another phrase for a bad execution; and a government ill executed, whatever may be its theory, must be, in practice, a bad government." (Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 69

If you have subscribed to the libels of his enemies, Hamilton’s views will surprise you. Here he is, in his own words.
    Democracy and Representative Government
“The true principle of a republic is that the people should choose whom they please to govern them. Representation is imperfect, in proportion as the current of popular favor is checked. The great source of free government, popular election, should be perfectly pure, and the most unbounded liberty allowed.”
Speech to NY Legislature, June 21, 1788 (LOA p. 493)

    Hamilton's financial program.
When President Washington in 1789 appointed Hamilton the first secretary of the Treasury, Congress asked him to draw up a plan for the "adequate support of the public credit." Envisaging himself as something of a prime minister in Washington's official family, Hamilton developed a bold and masterly program designed to build a strong union, one that would weave his political philosophy into the government. His immediate objectives were to establish credit at home and abroad and to strengthen the national government at the expense of the states. He outlined his program in four notable reports to Congress (1790-91). A result of the struggle over Hamilton's program and over issues of foreign policy was the emergence of national political parties. Like Washington, Hamilton had deplored parties, equating them with disorder and instability. He had hoped to establish a government of superior persons who would be above party. Yet he became the leader of the Federalist Party, a political organization in large part dedicated to the support of his policies. Hamilton placed himself at the head of that party because he needed organized political support and strong leadership in the executive branch to get his program through Congress. The political organization that challenged the Hamiltonians was the

    Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was one of the most influential of the United States' founding fathers. As the first secretary of the treasury he placed the new nation on a firm financial footing, and although his advocacy of strong national government brought him into bitter conflict with Thomas Jefferson and others, his political philosophy was ultimately to prevail in governmental development. Hamilton's own career was terminated prematurely when he was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. ~ Early Life ~ Hamilton was born on the West Indian island of Nevis, probably in 1755. Since he was the illegitimate son of Rachel Fawcett Lavien and James Hamilton, both of West Indian trading families, his exact birth date and the circumstances of his early life are difficult to determine. Modern research has established, however, that he was probably not born in 1757, as he and his children supposed; that he spent his youth mostly on the island of Saint Croix apprenticed as a clerk; and that in 1772 he was sent to New York City by his guardian, the merchant Nicholas Cruger.
Hamilton was obviously precocious, and his guardian sought to enroll him in the College of New Jersey at Princeton. When refused permission there to accelerate his program of studies, he enrolled instead at King's College (now Columbia University), New York City, in 1773 or 1774. In 1774-75, when he was not yet 20, he entered the growing dispute between the American colonies and the British government by writing many fervent tracts filled with doctrines of rebellion and natural rights derived from the philosopher John Locke.
