Biography:
Thomas Harriot
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies A contemporary of Shakespeare, Elizabeth I, Johannes Kepler, and Galilei Galileo, Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) was an English scientist and mathematician. His principal biographer, J. W. Shirley, was quoted in the website "Thomas Harriot's manuscripts," saying that in his time he was "England's most profound mathematician, most imaginative and methodical experimental scientist, and first of all Englishmen to make a telescope and turn it on the heavens." He was also an early English explorer of North America. He published very little in his life time, and the extensive scientific papers he left at his death suffered loss and then neglect until the twentieth century. Educated at Oxford Harriot was born in Oxfordshire , England, in 1560. Nothing is known about his parents except that his father was recorded as a plebeian when Harriot entered the University of Oxford on December 20, 1577. Of Harriot's early school years a boyhood friend, Tom Buckner, one day wrote, as quoted in

Harriot kept regular correspondence with other scientists and mathematicians, especially in England but also in mainland Europe, notably with Kepler . For unknown reasons, Harriot refrained from publishing most of his scientific work, with the exception of his observations as scientist to Lord Raleigh's 1585 expedition to the New World, published in 1588. He did, however, leave many notebooks of scientific observations, which were only uncovered much later in the late 18th century, and not properly studied for another 100 years thereafter.
Harriot's early telescopic observations rival those of Galileo and contemporaries, and it seems that Harriot may have been the first to view the Moon through a telescope, beating out Galileo by a few months. His first drawing of the Moon was made on July 26, 1609, whereas Galileo did not achieve this feat until December of the same year. Starting in July 1609, Harriot observed the Moon regularly, apparently for the purpose of determining the distance of the

, an eminent mathematician, was born at Oxford , or, as Anthony Wood expresses it, “ turn-; bled out of his mother’s womb in the lap of the Oxonian Muses ” in 1560. Having been instructed in grammarlearning in that city, he became a commoner of St. Maryhall, where he took the degree of B. A. in 1579. He had then so distinguished himself, by his uncommon skill in mathematics, as to be recommended soon after to sir Walter Raleigh as a proper preceptor to him in that science. Accordingly, that noble knight became his first patron, took him into his family, and allowed him a handsome pension. In 1585 he was sent over by sir Walter with his first colony to Virginia ; where, being settled, he was employed in discovering and surveying that country, in observing what commodities it produced, together with the manners and customs of its inhabitants. He published an account of it under this title, “ A brief and true Report of the Newfoundland of Virginia ” which was reprinted in the third voyage of Hakluyt’s “ Voyages.

Harriot, Thomas,
Harriot also spelled HARIOT (b. 1560, Oxfordd. July 2, 1621, London), mathematician and astronomer who founded the English school of algebra. Sir Walter Raleigh sent Harriot as a scientific adviser for the expedition of 1585-86 to Roanoke Island, off the coast of present North Carolina. Harriot's observations are found in A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588), which was later often reprinted. He became the leading scientist of the circle around Raleigh and received a pension from the Earl of Northumberland. In Artis Analyticae Praxis ad Aequationes Algebraicas Resolvendas (1631; "The Analytical Arts Applied to Solving Algebraic Equations"), Harriot improved the theory of equations, noting an important relation between coefficients and roots. In Artis he detailed the formation of equations from known roots and revealed that any n th degree equation and the product of n (greater Related Propaedia Topics: The 17th century: discovery of logarithms and analytic geometry, development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz
