Joel Chandler Harris
Folklorist, novelist, poet, journalist; born at Eatonton, Georgia U.S.A. 1848; died at Atlanta, Georgia , 3 July, 1908. Chiefly known for his stories of negro folk-lore which created an original department in American literature , he spent most of his life in journalistic work. Of humble parentage and meagre education , he knew and loved as a boy "fields, animals , and folk" better than books. Apprenticed in 1862 to a Plantation editor, whose library was open to journalism in a grove, worked on various Louisiana and Georgia papers, and from 1876 to his retirement in 1890 was on the staff of the Atlanta Constitution . "The Tar Baby", contributed by accident (1877), found him his vocation . His knowledge of nature and the negro , acquired unconsciously in "the plantation", ripened as he wrote, resulting in a series of volumes whereof "Bre'r Rabbit" the hero, "Bre'r Fox", the villain, and other animals , with Mr. Sun, Sister Moon, Uncle Wind, and Brother Dust are the dramatic personae. "Uncle Remus" a wise old negro , is the narrator, "Miss Sally" the guardian spirit , "the little boy" a breathless listener. Wit, humour, homely wisdom, and kindly sympathy, combined with unrivalled

Harris, Joel Chandler
(b . Dec. 9, 1848, Eatonton, Ga., U.S.d. July 3, 1908, Atlanta), American author, creator of the folk character Uncle Remus. As apprentice on a weekly paper, The Countryman , he became familiar with the lore and dialects of the plantation slave. He established a reputation as a brilliant humorist and writer of dialect while employed on newspapers at Macon, Ga., New Orleans, Forsyth and Savannah, Ga., and, after 1876, on the staff of the Atlanta Constitution for 24 years. In 1879 "Tar -Baby," a story probably inspired by his reading of William Owens' work on black folklore, appeared in the Atlanta Constitution and created a vogue for a distinctive type of dialect literature. This and successive Uncle Remus stories won for Harris a secure place in American literature. The pattern was new: Uncle Remus, the wise, genial old black man, tells stories about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and other animals to the little son of a plantation owner and interweaves his philosophy of the world about him. Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings was published in book form in 1880, followed by others. Included in a series of children's books were:

    Harris, Joel Chandler
Harris, Joel Chandler, , American short-story writer and humorist, b. Eatonton, Ga., considered one of the greatest American regionalist writers. As an apprentice to the editor of the Countryman, a newspaper published on a Southern plantation, Harris gained firsthand knowledge of black slaves and their folklore. His stories and sketches of the South were originally published in the Atlanta Constitution, with which he was associated from 1876 to 1900. Harris's first collection, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1881), brought him immediate fame. Featuring as their narrator a lovable, shrewd former slave, the Uncle Remus stories drew upon African-American folklore and humor and captured the authentic life, character, and dialect of Southern blacks. The demand for his stories and sketches was so great that Harris followed with nine more books in a similar vein, including The Tar Baby (1904) and Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit (1906). In other notable works, such as

  • O N July 20, 1879 an undersized thirty-year-old journalist from Atlanta known as Joe Harris began a journey from relative obscurity to interregional fame. On that day, the Atlanta Constitution published the young copy editor's "Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox as told by Uncle Remus." Within months, magazines across the country were reprinting his tales, and after more than 1,000 written requests for a collection, the first Uncle Remus book was published in November, 1880. At the time, Harris said his purpose was not ethnology, or folklore analysis, but simply documentation. He doubted that his stories and character sketches would have any lasting historical value. He was wrong. UncleRemus.com is an attempt to reintroduce Harris' tales, and his legendary narrator, while placing them in a historical context. The primary sources and commentaries we offer hopefully will shed light on Harris' purpose in publishing his stories and the public response to both his Remus tales and his other works. They will make observations about post-Civil War black culture, and Southern society in general, using the stories and the reactions they engendered as points of reference.
