Great gothic by Nathaniel Hawthorne's son A unique novel with gothic elements, written by the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story focuses on the title character's mysterious malady. Every seven years, he falls into a trance-like state to emerge with one of two alternate personalities. This book has it all - insanity, death, a secret chamber, a ghost, revenge, duels, a court trial, star-crossed lovers, and a grisly ending. A must-read for fans of strange or gothic literature. Twenty Days with Julian and Little Bunny by Papa (New York Review Books) List Price: Price: You Save:
Description
In July of 1851, Nathaniel Hawthorne's wife and daughters took a trip to visit relatives. How Hawthorne and his five-year-old son Julian managed in their absence is the subject of this tender and funny excerpt from Hawthorne's notebooks. Each day is spent swimming, skipping stones, picking berries, and subduing armies of thistles. There are lots of questions ("He has baited me with more questions, references, and observations, than mortal father ought to be expected to endure"), crises concerning a pet bunny, and only one moment of grown-up companionship - when Mr. Herman Melville stops by to discuss eternity over cigars. This true-life story by a great American writer emerges from obscurity to shine a delightful light upon family life - then and now. An introduction by noted novelist Paul Auster adds to this intimate portrait.

"Bressant"
"You have shaken Professor
Valeyon's confidence in his wisdom and judgment, and the value of his
experience; you have made him realize that the more God has to do with
education the better; you have broken down Cornelia's self-complacency,
and shown her that a beautiful body cannot be safe or happy without a
soul to take care of it. Abbie has learned from you that love, and
generosity, and self-sacrifice, may all be worthless if they be founded only upon individual grounds, to the exclusion of humanity; and Sophie has been taught, by the love she has felt for you, to be humble and charitable, and to see how easily self-interest and pride may be made to look like zeal for others, and benevolence." And then Bressant seemed to be conscious that Sophie was bidding him farewell, but he could not see her nor touch her; he was shaken with grief, and yet was filled with a strange kind of happiness, and a feeling of resolute power. Gradually the influence of her presence faded

@import url(../index.css); Hawthorne, Julian Practical Reference Library Hawthorne, JULIAN (1846- ), an American author, son of Nathaniel Hawthorne, born in Boston. He studied civil engineering in America and in Germany, but practiced that profession only a short time. He spent about ten years abroad, and while in Europe wrote Bressant and several other successful stories. Of the novels written after his return to America, The Professor's Sister and John Parmlee's Curse are noteworthy. His stories do not follow the common form of romance and have interesting touches of mystery about them. He has also written a History of the United States and has contributed to the newspapers articles on the 1897 famine in India and on the Cuban War. In Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife he has made a valuable contribution to the biography of his famous father.

Julian Hawthorne (1846-1934) , American author and journalist wrote the biography of his father, Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife (1884). As a prolific writer of short stories, poems, novels, mystery/detective fiction, essays, travel books, biographies, and histories, though never really achieving critical acclaim for his own works, Hawthorne lived in the shadow of his father and Hawthorne and His Circle (1903) illustrates this as both blessing and burden. Julian Hawthorne, the only son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) and writer and painter Sophia Peabody, was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 22 June 1846. Julian had two sisters, Una (1844-1877), and Rose (1851-1926). In 1853 the family settled in the home that Nathaniel Hawthorne had called "The Wayside" in Concord, Massachusetts, which he had bought from the Alcott family.
