THE DOUGLAS FAMILY
Anson County Relatives Douglas Family Clemons Family Willie "Douglas" Thomas ... Reunion Here is the Douglas family as I found it to be from 1880 to the early 1900's in Anson County NC. Henderson Douglas a mulatto who was born into slavery sometime around 1825 married Mourning Meachum-Douglas who was also born into slavery sometime around 1830. Mourning was owned by William Meachum of Sandy Point Anson County.
Note: Just because Henderson and Mourning were said to be man and wife with an X amount of children born during slavery does not necessarily mean that they lived together as man and wife raising a family of children. I have read many times where the slave parents lived together or apart as man and wife and sometimes have different slave masters. I have also found that the offspring's of these unions were claimed by the female's slave owner. Here is some information that I came across on Sarah Louise Agustus, Tempie Herndon Durham and Betty Cofer exslaves from the Fayetteville, Durham and an unknown area of NC whose parents or mates were also owned by different slave owners. Here is a more detailed evaluation of this matter.
Henderson and Mourning were said to have had 19 children, but I have only found information on 12 and possibly 5 others that are not listed below. The following are the descentdants of Henderson Douglas:

Praise for The Strength of the Pack:
"Doug Valentine belongs to that precious remnant of journalists and historians with the wisdom to see our time, the integrity and courage to write about it, and the literary grace to bring it all chillingly alive. This indispensable book may quite well be the best yet in the author's already singular body of work. He takes us again into that dark inner reality of policy and politics that Americans so tragically deny and evade, and gives us back a reflection there is no denying, no escaping. If there is hope for America at this moment of so many reckonings, it is out of pages like these." - Roger Morris, Author of Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American Politician

SUMMARY England in the long eighteenth century has often been regarded as a deferential society under aristocratic leadership, or more recently, as a society whose internal tensions were dispersed by the persistent experience of war. This book takes a different view. Drawing together the implications of recent work on demography, labour, and law, it seeks to re-explore the power relations in English society and the ongoing struggles over popular entitlements and elite privilege. Focusing primarily on the experience of England's lower orders, Douglas Hay and Nicholas Rogers accord new significance to the decline of customary rights and claims, and to the triumph of market forces and the law, showing how the paternalism of the first half of the century gave way to the sharper class articulations of the second, culminating in the birth of a working-class radicalism in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.

39. INTERVIEW WITH DOUGLAS COUPLAND
An interview by Alexander Laurence from 1994.
http://www.altx.com/interviews/douglas.coupland.html
Interview with Douglas Coupland
by Alexander Laurence
(c) 1994 Douglas Coupland is a lucid Canadian writer who loves nature. He reminded me of that fact. "Whenever I smoked pot in high school it was always around nature." He is the author of three books: Generation X, Shampoo Planet, and most recently, Life After God. His new book of short stories and drawings describes the mental framework of someone who grew up in a secular environment. Coupland is a frequent contributor for The New Republic, The New York Times, and Wired. For Wired he recently wrote "Microserfs" which was about Bill Gates and the Microsoft company. Coupland was born on December 30, 1961 in a NATO base in West Germany. He now lives in Vancouver, where he grew up. He claims that the most important images in his life were Marcia Brady, The Poseidon Adventure, and Patty Hearst. His story, "Patty Hearst," recalls the days of her captivity in a Western Addition room in San Francisco. One of the Baudrillard-like comments by Coupland in his new book explores his new view of memory: "I believe that you've had most of your important memories by the time you're thirty. After that, memory becomes water overflowing into an already full cup." Coupland, as a writer, has always been short on character and psychology, and big on ideas and conceptual things. Many excerpts from his new book, can be seen on MTV. He may be one of the few contemporary writers who is guilty of too much thinking.
