COURT LIFE IN CHINA
THE CAPITAL
ITS OFFICIALS AND PEOPLE By ISAAC TAYLOR HEADLAND Professor in the Peking University Until within the past ten years a study of Chinese court life would have been an impossibility. The Emperor, the Empress Dowager, and the court ladies were shut up within the Forbidden City, away from a world they were anxious to see, and which was equally anxious to see them. Then the Emperor instituted reform, the Empress Dowager came out from behind the screen, and the court entered into social relations with Europeans. For twenty years and more Mrs. Headland has been physician to the family of the Empress Dowager's mother, the Empress' sister, and many of the princesses and high official ladies in Peking. She has visited them in a social as well as a professional way, has taken with her her friends, to whom the princesses have shown many favours, and they have themselves been constant callers at our home. It is to my wife, therefore, that I am indebted for much of the information contained in this book.

Wen Wing Dynasty Qing Dynasty Father Guwalgiya Ronglu Mother Wanzhen Born Died 1921 (aged 37) Youlan (幼蘭) (1884 - 1921), was the mother of the last Chinese emperor Puyi , also known as the Xuantong Emperor. She was married to Zaifeng, 2nd Prince Chun and also gave birth to another son, Puyi's younger brother Pujie Also known as the 2nd Princess Chun , her Manchu given name was Youlan (zh: 幼蘭). Youlan was also called Funiu. She was the daughter of the Manchu general Ronglu (榮祿) (b. 1836 - d. 1903) from the Guwalgiya clan and his second consort Wanzhen. Initially Ronglu's concubine, she was elevated to the status of consort when Ronglu's first consort died. Ronglu one of the leaders of the conservative faction at the court, and a staunch supporter (and cousin) of Empress Dowager Cixi . She rewarded him for his support by allowing his daughter to get married into the imperial family. The marriage, however, was an unhappy one, in part due to the fact that Zaifeng did not like her father. Lady Aisin-Gioro was separated from her son while he was still very young, when he became emperor. She was only allowed to see him very rarely, his upbringing being undertaken by an army of

Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes [Literary Excerpts]
Annotation
Isaac Taylor Headland (1859-1942), a resident of Beijing and a scholar at Peking (Beijing) University, joined other contemporaries interested in both popular culture and folklore in collecting and transcribing Chinese children's rhymes. The rhymes were shared by nurse-maids who cared for the children of expatriates living in the city as well as through interviews of kids who sang in the streets and neighborhoods of the city and surrounding region. The text, which includes both English and Chinese versions of the rhymes as well as photographs, offers an interesting perspective on popular culture, social roles related to gender and family, as well as the material culture of daily life in turn-of-the-century China.

The Chinese Boy and Girl [Literary Excerpt]
Annotation
Issac Taylor Headland (1859-1942), a resident of Beijing and a scholar at Peking (Beijing) University, joined other contemporaries interested in both popular culture and folklore in his own study of daily life in China. He was particularly concerned with the collection and transcription of Chinese children's rhymes. Readings from his texts offer a look at a Westerner's own perspective on children's culture and family life as well as the complexities of cross-cultural exchange. Headland's voice offers an example of a global encounter at a moment of high imperialism – indeed, these texts were published in the immediate wake of the dramatic Boxer Uprising and siege of foreign legations that occurred in Beijing during the summer of 1900.

No thorough study of Chinese child life can be made until the wall of Chinese exclusiveness is broken down and the homes of the East are thrown open to the people of the West. Glimpses of that life, however, are available, sufficient in number and character to give a fairly good idea of what it must be. The playground is by no means always hidden, lease of all when it is the street. The Chinese nurse brings her Chinese rhymes, stories, and games into the foreigner's home for the amusement of its little ones. Chinese kindergarten methods and appliances have no superior in their ingenuity and their ability to interest, as well as to instruct. In the matter of traveling shows and jugglers also, no country is better supplied, and these are chiefly for the entertainment of the little ones.

David Balfour has never had an adventure. He has never spent a night camping in the Scottish Highlands. He has never sailed the high seas. He has never fought in a battle. In fact David Balfour has never even left home. All he knows is a quiet country life. All this changes after the death of his parents. He suddenly learns that he, David Balfour, is a man of wealth and standing, and that he is not destined for a simple life after all. All he needs to do to assume this new station in life is to travel to the town of Cramond, Scotland, to collect his inheritance from his father's younger brother, an uncle he had not even known existed. But David soon discovers that this is not as simple as it sounds, as he struggles to survive and outwit his treacherous uncle in this classic adventure story. Original oil paintings by N. C. Wyeth capture the vitality of Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of fortune, camaraderie, betrayal, and independence.
