21. HipBone Games Welcome
Includes information on playing and designing the games.
http://home.earthlink.net/~hipbone/
It's been a while: click on the update button for details. Welcome to HipBone's site. The HipBone Games are so simple a child can play them : if you've ever thought, "and that reminds me", or "isn't that like such and such", you've already got the basic idea. We call them "HipBone Games" because of the old song, "the hip-bone connected to the thigh-bone", and because they are games of connection, of the links between ideas. The HipBone Games site offers you a variety of simple boards, and playing our games is as easy and as subtle as mapping your ideas onto the board positions. It's pretty much like using one of those "clustering" devices you find in creativity seminars and problem-solving workshops one idea goes in a little balloon over here, and it's linked to another idea in a little balloon over there... The trick comes when you have to link your next move, your next idea, not just to your own previous moves, but to your opponent's... which is why we call them "mind to mind" games. Here's what you'll find in the rest of our site: Mind-to-mind games Here we let you in on the secret of our games that like conversations, our games are pretty direct communications from one mind to another. This means you don't have to worry that our games will be

24. Center For Ludic Synergy

The Center for Ludic Synergy
= CENTRVM VBIQVE EST =
The Center for Ludic Synergy exists to foster ludism , or philosophy as it applies to games and gaming. This includes such questions as:
  • Should we play games? If so, why?
  • Why do people have an innate urge to play?
  • What makes a game good?
  • Can lessons learned in games be used in life, and vice versa?
  • Is life in fact a game?
The CLS sponsors a number of projects related to ludism and bringing people together to talk about ludic topics; see the section CLS Projects . The CLS will attempt to incorporate as a non-profit corporation eventually, but one thing we can do for game designers and philosophers right now is offer them advertising-free web space, and optionally a Linux shell account with email access. You do not need to subscribe to Ludism as a philosophy (see below) in order to take advantage of this offer; you just need to be a game designer or thinker. If you aren't, but still want free web space and email, we recommend you try Yahoo! or similar sites. If you are, however, and would like an account, please contact Ron Hale-Evans at rwhe@ludism.org

    Biography
German writer whose popularity extended well beyond his lifetime. He was best known for "The Glass Bead Game," "Steppenwolf" and "Siddhartha." He was considered a guru to the youth from 1905 until his death and beyond, one of the most inspirational writers of the 20th century. Hesse's father, Johannes Hesse, was born in 1847 of Russian descent, becoming a Swiss citizen. Formerly a missionary, he became director of a publishing house. His mother was the daughter of a missionary, born in India in October 1842. Her second marriage was to Johannes Hesse on 11/22/1874. Six children resulted from this union (she had three from first marriage, two surviving, and had been widowed in 1870). Herman was her second born child with Johannes. From the time Herman was age four to nine, the family resided in Basel, but they returned to Germany where he lived until he was 13. He then attended Latin school to prepare for his examinations, having to give up his Swiss citizenship in order to be accepted in the German seminary. He stayed in the seminary only seven months, fleeing "in order to become a writer." He attempted suicide at 15 and was sent to a clinic for nervous diseases. He was later admitted to a German gymnasium. At 16, he passed the selection service exam and volunteered for one year of service. Following his service he took an apprenticeship in a clockwork factory in Calw, Germany. The next year he apprenticed in a bookstore.

      by: Willard Van De Bogart
Insights Earth Portals Introduction M agister Ludi-the Glass Bead Game, was a novel written in 1943 by the German writer Hermann Hesse who was born in 1877 in Claw, Germany, and died in 1962 in Montagnola, Switzerland. In 1946 Hesse received the Nobel Prize in literature for Magister Ludi. In the archives of the Glass Bead Game it is written that Joseph Knecht was the Magister Ludi of the Glass Bead Game in a place called Castalia. Who among you remember Castilia?
"Castalia is a symbolic realm where all spiritual values are kept alive and present, specifically through the practices of the Glass Bead Game. It depicts a future society in which the realm of culture is set apart to pursue its goals in splendid isolation..."May 1969 - Theodore Ziolkowski
50 years later the parallels between the Glass Bead Game and the Internet are very similar. Capturing a complete description of the Glass Bead Game is not easy. Here is a sample taken from a letter written by Hesse's character Joseph Knecht: "I suddenly realized that in the language, or at any rate in the spirit of the Glass Bead Game, everything actually was all-meaningful, that every symbol and combination of symbol led not hither and yon, not to single examples, experiments, and proofs, but into the center, the mystery and innermost heart of the world, into primal knowledge. Every transition from major to minor in a sonata, every transformation of a myth or a religious cult, every classical or artistic formulation was, I realized in that flashing moment, if seen with truly a meditative mind, nothing but a direct route into the interior of the cosmic mystery, where in the alternation between inhaling and exhaling, between heaven and earth, between Yin and Yang holiness is forever being created.

    The Waldzell Glass Bead Game
Last modified: Thu 5/22/97 1730 PDT The Glass Bead Game at Waldzell is a concretized version of the game described, in general terms, in Hermann Hesse's 1943 novel, Das Glasperlenspiel (English: Magister Ludi or The Glass Bead Game ). Although Waldzell provides guidance in the form of rules of play , the central product is the Glass Bead Game Archive . The purpose of the Game Archive (which has a precedent in the novel) is to provide a single, easily accessible repository of completed games. For Waldzell, this repository serves both the Game directly as a source of structures upon which to build, as well as the Canon as a source of incremental growth and concensus. There is a brief overview of the Waldzell Glass Bead Game for complete newcomers. For official, detailed information on the current version of the rules of the Waldzell Game, proceed to the rules page There is an electronic mailing list, GBG-List , for those who are interested in the Waldzell Game and other concretizations of Hesse's idea. Description
This best selling classic takes place in ancient Nepal around the time of Gautama Buddha. It starts as Siddhartha, the son of a Brahmin, leaves his home to join the ascetics with his companion Govinda. The two set out in the search of enlightenment. Siddhartha goes through a series of changes and realizations as he attempts to achieve this goal. In the shade of a banyan tree, a grizzled ferryman sits listening to the river. Some say he's a sage. He was once a wandering shramana and, briefly, like thousands of others, he followed Gotama the Buddha, enraptured by his sermons. But this man, Siddhartha, was not a follower of any but his own soul. Born the son of a Brahmin, Siddhartha was blessed in appearance, intelligence, and charisma. In order to find meaning in life, he discarded his promising future for the life of a wandering ascetic. Still, true happiness evaded him. Then a life of pleasure and titillation merely eroded away his spiritual gains until he was just like all the other "child people," dragged around by his desires. Like Hermann Hesse's other creations of struggling young men

    Biografia, pensiero e aforismi.
    http://spazioinwind.libero.it/lalcova/hermann_hesse.htm
