The year 1853 yielded even greater results in creative writing. In the spring of 1854 some of my publications persuaded King Maximilian II of Bavaria to offer me, at the suggestion of Emanuel Geibel, a position in Munich with an annual salary of 1000 guilders, to take part in his so-called symposia, weekly soires at which scholars and poets were gathered. Before I moved I was married to Kugler's daughter Margarete, whom death took away from me in the autumn of 1862 after she had borne me four children. Five years later I married a young woman from Munich, Anna Schubart, with whom for forty-four years I have lived happily, except for the premature deaths of two children and a son from my first marriage. Heyse, Paul Johann Ludwig von
(b. March 15, 1830, Berlind. April 2, 1914, Munich), German writer and prominent member of the traditionalist Munich school who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1910. Heyse studied Classical and Romance languages and travelled for a year in Italy, supported by a research grant. After completing his studies he became an independent scholar and was called to Munich by Maximilian II of Bavaria. There, with the poet Emanuel Geibel , he became the head of the Munich circle of writers, who sought to preserve traditional artistic values from the encroachments of political radicalism, materialism, and realism. He developed a representative Classical-Romantic style and became a master of the carefully wrought short story. Chief among his short stories is L' Arrabiata (1855; Eng. trans., 1967). He also published novels ( Kinder der Welt, Children of the World, 1882) and many unsuccessful plays. Among his best works are his translations of the works of Giacomo Leopardi and other Italian poets. In 1871 he formulated a definition of the novella form, the
