Holmes, Oliver Wendell
(b . Aug. 29, 1809, Cambridge, Mass., U.S.d. Oct. 7, 1894, Cambridge), American physician, poet, and humorist notable for his medical research and teaching, and as the author of the "Breakfast-Table" series of essays. Holmes read law at Harvard University before deciding on a medical career; and, following studies at Harvard and in Paris, he received his degree from Harvard in 1836. He practiced medicine for 10 years, taught anatomy for two years at Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.), and in 1847 became professor of anatomy and physiology at Harvard. He was later made dean of the Harvard Medical School, a post he held until 1882. His most important medical contribution was that of calling attention to the contagiousness of puerperal fever (1843). Holmes achieved his greatest fame, however, as a humorist and poet. He wrote much poetry and comic verse during his early school years; he won national acclaim with the publication of "Old Ironsides" (1830), which aroused public sentiment against destruction of the USS

By Oliver Wendell Holmes September 16, 1830 Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high, And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the god of storms, The lightning and the gale!

    A Note on the Text
The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table was printed in monthly installments, beginning with the first issue of Atlantic Monthly magazine, November, 1857, until October, 1858. Then it was issued in book form, with many editions, including notes by the author. As Holmes explains in the "Autobiography", he had first sketched the Autocrat in essays in New-England Magazine , November, 1831, and January, 1832. Two later books, the Professor (1859), and the Poet (1872), completed the Breakfast-Table series. They are more serious and philosophical and not reproduced here at this time, except for three poems also published elsewhere. This 1902 edition has Anglicized spelling, so we have returned the text of later parts to the American spelling we suppose the original notes used. Otherwise we have tried to preserve the punctuation and layout of the original for this online edition. For reasons of space, we have chosen to make the poems and illustrations into separate files accessible by selecting links in square brackets inline in the text. The poems can thus be accessed in a different order than in the book. Notes at the end of verse pages are usually from Horace Scudder, editor of the Cambridge Edition of the

My publishers suggested the bringing together of the three poems here presented to the reader as being to some extent alike in their general character. "The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" [the title of the entire volume; that poem is presented in another file online here, shay.html The terrible witchcraft drama of has been seriously treated, as it well deserves to be. The story has been told in two large volumes by the Rev. Charles Wentworth Upham, and in a small and more succinct volume, based upon his work, by his daughter-in-law, Caroline E. Upham. The delusion commonly spoken of, as if it belonged to Salem, was more widely diffused through the towns of Essex County . Looking upon it as a pitiful and long dead and buried superstition, I trust my poem will no more offend the good people of Essex County than Tam O'Shanter worries the honest folk of Ayrshire.

Oliver Wendell Holmes
HOLMES was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 29, 1809, and died October 7, 1894. At the age of twenty he graduated at Harvard University, then took up the study of law. This study, however, was soon abandoned for medicine. He studied in Europe for a short time, and took his degree as doctor of medicine at Cambridge, in 1836. Two years later he was appointed to the chair of Anatomy and Physiology in Dartmouth College. This position he held till 1847, when he accepted a similar position at Harvard, which he held till 1892. All of his literary work was performed in addition to the labors of a continuous professorship in college of about forty-seven years.
Holmes' literary tastes were early indicated by his comic and satiric verse contributed to " The Collegian ." These were excellent of their kind. In his early works, the mirth so often outweighed the sentiment as to lessen the promise and the self-prediction of his being a poet indeed. While many of his youthful stanzas are serious and elegant, those which approach the feeling of true poetry are in celebration of companionship and good cheer. He seemed to exemplify what Emerson was wont to preach, that there is honest wisdom in song and joy. He contributed numerous pieces to American periodicals, and in 1836 collected his poems into a volume. His life was not marked by any noted events, but it was like the steady movement of a great river. It grew broader and deeper in each mile of its progress. "Holmes was a shining instance of one who did solid work as a teacher and practitioner, in spite of his success in literature." "
