Homer ( Glyptothek , Munich)
Homer : legendary Greek poet, author of the Iliad and Odyssey The Greeks and Romans always thought that the legendary poet Homer was the greatest author ever. However, we know hardly anything about the man or men who composed the Iliad (a long epic on the wrath of the warrior Achilles, which endangered the Greek expedition to Troy ) or the Odyssey (an equally long poem on the difficult voyage home of Odysseus). At the moment, most scholars agree that these texts were dictated to a writer by a very capable bard, who used older, oral traditions, at the beginning of the eighth century BCE. We do not know to what extent later poets have made additions or changes to the two epics. It is interesting to compare the two poems of Homer with the standard version Babylonian Epic of Gilgame . There's a similarity: a capable poet writes down a poem that had until then been transmitted orally. The main hero of the Iliad Bust of Homer (British Museum, London)
There's also a difference. We can not say something meaningful about the contents of the pre-Homeric poetry, and it is very difficult to say whether a Trojan War has ever taken place. The "prehistory" of the

HOMER' ("Oj,cnpos), the great epic poet of Greece . Many of the works once attributed to him are lost; those which remain are the two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, thirty-three Hymns a mock epic (the Battle of the Frogs and Mice ), and some pieces of a few lines each (the so-called Epigrams). Ancient Accounts of Homer. - Of the date of Homer probably no record, real or pretended, ever existed. Herodotus (ii. 53) maintains that Hesiod and Homer lived not more than 400 years 1 This article was thoroughly revised by Dr D. B. Monro before his death in 1905; a few points have since been added by Mr. T. W. Allen. before his own time, consequently not much before 850 B.C. From the controversial tone in which he expresses himself it is evident that others had made Homer more ancient; and accordingly the dates given by later authorities, though very various, generally fall within the 10th and itth centuries B.C. But none of these statements has any claim to the character of external evidence. The extant lives of Homer (edited in Westermann's Vitarum Scriptores Graeci minores ) are eight in number, including the piece called the

The Life and Work of Homer:
Homer was the most important and earliest of the Greek and Roman writers. Greeks and Romans didn't count themselves educated unless they knew his poems. His influence was felt not only on literature, but on ethics and morality via lessons from his masterpieces. He is the first place to look for information on Greek myth and religion. Yet, despite Homer's prominence, we have no firm evidence that he ever lived.
    Quote About Homer:
Homer and Hesiod have ascribed to the gods all things that are a shame and a disgrace among mortals, stealing and adulteries and deceiving on one another.

The Life of the Blind Bard:
Because Homer performed and sang he is called a bard. He is thought to have been blind, and so is known as the blind bard, just as Shakespeare, calling on the same tradition, is known as the bard of Avon. This particular version of the Iliad , the story of the siege of Troy, is a translation by Samuel Butler, first published in 1898.
aritei . This is the one thing every Greek warrior thrived for. It was honor. This honor could be found in battling a more experienced opponent than yourself, even if it did end in your death. Killing a man lower in rank, killing him after promising something to him, or defacing an enemy after his death could all result in the loss of aritei , immediately resulting in the lowering of one's honor. The Iliad is truly entertaining, whether you are reading it for the entertainment or historical value. So please, go, enjoy this amazing story of pride, honor, love, and war.Submitted by Jessi Kluvich

Can life get any better for Homer J. Simpson? He juggles the roles of husband, father, safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, bowler, beer drinker, astronaut, small business owner and dreamer, and makes it all look easy. But it wasn't always so easy for Homer J. Raised by his father, Abe, who tried to compensate for the absence of Homer's radical hippie mother, Homer graduated at the bottom of his high school class and managed to earn the distinction of being the longest-term entry-level employee at the plant. Together with his high school sweetheart, Marge Bouvier, Homer settled down in Evergreen Terrace, the nicest upper-lower-middle class section of Springfield, to raise his three precious children. Homer is fond of Duff Beer, donuts, Marge's pork chops and watching the Bee Guy on the Spanish channel. His dislikes include his boss, Mr. Burns, yard work and his neighbor, Ned Flanders.

Hosting Contact Us Frequent Questions Homer, Michigan Homer is a small, rural community located in southeastern Calhoun County at the junction of M-60 and M-99. It is situated on the Kalamazoo River, which includes a dam and mill pond just to the east of town. The picturesque downtown area contains several turn-of-the-century buildings and an old fieldstone library. A veterans’ memorial is located in the circle just west of the main street area. Homer was first settled by Milton Barney in 1832, who built a sawmill and a store, calling it Barneyville. In 1834 when a post office was registered, it was renamed Homer after the city in Courtland County, New York, at the request of many of the residents who had moved from there. It was incorporated as a village in 1871. Photos courtesy of: Ken Huisjen If you have comments or suggestions, please take a minute to write to the

There will be fewer trees, less available water and not as many big game animals on the Kenai Peninsula in 100 years, say scientists from across Alaska in a new study. The study, "Connecting Alaska's Landscapes into the Future," projects climate scenarios for the next 100 years using temperature and precipitation measurements from every two square kilometers of the state. It also examines the ranges of four different species (barren-ground caribou, reed canary grass, Alaska marmot and trumpeter swan) and projects how they will change as the climate does Complete Story
