Detroit, Michigan, USA Occupation magician, escapologist, stunt performer, actor, historian, pilot. Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926), was a magician , escape artist, and daredevil who captivated much of the Western world with his exploits in the first quarter of the twentieth century. He amazed and excited crowds with his death defying escapes. He wore shackles and handcuffs and ordered his assistants to lock him in trunks or submerge him underwater. Houdini became world famous by traveling across America and the world thrilling his fans. In performing his escapes and feats of physical and psychological endurance, Houdini pushed his mind and his body to extremes, proving himself to be an athlete as well as a magician. He was able to control the mind-body dynamic to extraordinary lengths. He also believed in the reality of the after-life and thus of a spiritual dimension to human existence. He achieved such fame for his exploits that the name "Houdini" remains synonymous with the art of escapism.

Biography
Hungarian-American magician who was known as the world's greatest escape artist, performing sensational and dangerous feats for audiences that included heads of state. In 1903 he performed for Alexandra, Empress of all the Russia's. She believed, as did Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that Houdini did not use just slight of hand, but indeed performed magical feats and had psychic powers. At his peak he earned thousands of dollars a week in America and Europe. Born Ehrich Weiss, the middle son of five boys, the family moved to America to escape rabid and highly dangerous anti-Semitism in Hungary, first to Appleton, Wisconsin and later to Milwaukee before settling in New York City. His father, Samuel, was a self-styled rabbi and his mother, Cecilia Steiner Weiss, was probably the one real love of his life. When Houdini was 12 his father, on his deathbed, made him promise to care for his mother for as long as she lived, which he did devotedly. His younger brother Theodore was also a magician. As a young man, he joined the circus as a trapeze artist and took up magic. In 1891 he did his first professional performance. Beginning in medicine shows and vaudeville, he astounded people with escapes from handcuffs and graduated to more and more difficult escapes through the years.

The Great Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini was born on March 12, 1874 in Budpest, Hungary, with the name of Ehrich Weisz. He was one of six children and the son of Rabbi Mayer Weisz and his second wife, Cecilia Steiner. In 1876, Mayer Weisz immigrated to the United States with the dream of a better life. He found work as a rabbi and changed his last name to Weiss. In 1876, the remainder of the family joined him in the United States.
The family moved to Milwaukee when Ehrich was eight years old. During his early years, Ehrich sold newspapers and shined shoes to help support the family. On October 28, 1883, nine year old Ehrich made his first appearance on stage, performing a trapeze act. He billed himself, "Ehrich, the Prince of the Air." At 12, Ehrich hopped a freight car and ran away from home. A year later her returned to New York and continued to help support his family by working as a messenger, necktie cutter, and photography assistant. Nothing is known of his year away from his family.
About this time, Ehrich and his brother Theo began to pursue an interest in magic. As a stage name, Ehrich Weiss became Harry Houdini by adding an ìiî to the last name of his idol, French magician Robert Houdin. Harry is simply an Americanized version of his nickname, Ehrie. At 17, Ehrich, now known as Harry Houdini, left his family to pursue his magic career. By the age of twenty, Harry had been performing small acts throughout New York. He soon married and joined a circus where he began to develop and perfect his escape tricks.
