Scientific Background
The Human Genome Project hopes to improve lives by sequencing the genome. Francis Crick, one of the discoverers of the structure of the DNA molecule, lecturing ca. 1979. Source: Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine. Photograph: Bradley Smith. Scientists over decades have explored and mapped lands, oceans and the heavens with the expectation of increasing our awareness of the environment in which we live. Underlying this search for knowledge is also the desire to improve human existence through the discovery of beneficial resources. The Human Genome Project (HGP) has served to explore our genetic environment to make us aware of the beneficial resources that might contribute to understanding and improving our lives.

Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project is a global, long-term research effort to identify the estimated 30,000 genes in human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and to figure out the sequences of the chemical bases that make up human DNA. Findings are being collected in database s that researchers share. In addition to its scientific objectives, the Project also aims to address ethical, legal, and social issues (which the Project refers to as "ELSI"). The Project will make use also of results from the genetic research done on other animals, such as the fruit fly and the laboratory mouse. Research findings are expected to provide a dramatically greater understanding of how life works and specifically how we might better diagnose and treat human disorders. Besides giving us insights into human DNA, findings about nonhuman DNA may offer new ways to control our environment. A genome is the sum of all the DNA in an organism. The DNA includes genes, each of which carries some information for making certain proteins, which in turn determine physical appearance, certain behavioral characteristics, how well the organism combats specific diseases, and other characteristics. There are four chemical bases in a genome. These bases are abbreviated as A, T, C, and G. The particular order of these chemical bases as they are repeated millions and even billions of time is what makes species different and each organism unique. The human genome has 3 billion pairs of bases.

Human Genome

Students will do the following:
Learn about the goals of the Human Genome Project (HGP) Discuss the scientific and ethical implications of the project Materials
The class will need the following:
Internet access Newspaper and magazine articles and other current resources about the Human Genome Project Poster board Procedures
Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about genes. Explain to students that genes are made up of double strands of deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. The DNA provides the genetic instructions for everything a cell does. In particular, the sequence of the subunits of DNA, called bases, plays a part in determining whether a person will get sick and how well that person will respond to medication. To understand how the body works as well as diseases and treatments, scientists must understand the human genome, or the complete set of genetic instructions. To do so, they are mapping these instructions in the Human Genome Project, or HGP. Share the following information about the HGP with the students
  • The long-term goal of the project is to locate the estimated 30,000 or more human genes on all the chromosomes and determine their sequence along each strand of DNA.

Human Genome Project
Home Library Technology Computer Encyclopedia A bioinformatics project that has identified the 30,000 genes in human DNA. Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Human Genome Project started in 1990 and released its findings in February 2001 along with findings from a separate project by Celera Genomics Group. There are similar projects in other countries as well. The purpose is to store the three billion chemical base pairs (the DNA sequence) derived from these analyses in databases for use in biomedical research. See micro array The End Goal The goal of the Human Genome Project is to determine the relationships between DNA makeup and human traits and predispositions. Although sequencing costs are extremely expensive today, it is expected that when the cost to sequence an individual reaches $1,000, it will enable a new field of "personalized genomics" to dramatically alter the course of medicine. See Personal Genome Project A Human Component Dictionary This information is not a blueprint of the human being, rather it is a dictionary of components. Once believed that each gene made only one protein, it is now believed that each gene creates numerous proteins, although this information is expected to take years to determine. Part of the U.S. government project is to study the ethical and legal impact that this information will have on society. An abundance of information can be found at www.genome.gov.

Overview
Human Genome Project
Begun formally in 1990, the Human Genome Project is a 13 year effort coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health to identify all of the approximate 30,000 genes in human DNA; Determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA; store this information in databases; improve tools for data analysis; transfer related technologies to all sectors; address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project; to train scientists who will be able to use the tools and resources developed through the HGP to improve health provide internships in order to encourage minority students to pursue the sciences, biotechnology, and scientific research. As leaders in academia, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's National Educational Foundation was the first Greek letter organization to address this issue of concern. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has undertaken the responsibility to serve as a link between the scientific community and the general population-the people whom our local chapters serve in their communities. The Sorority believes that there is a continuing need to disseminate this information to minority communities about the Human Genome Project and the status of minorities within this health research, as well as provide an appreciation of the societal implications for the knowledge gained from this research.

Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project was a 13-year international project organized by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. This application was developed to verify what base pairs DNA was made out of, accurately identify them, and be able to map the estimated 20,000 – 25,000 genes located within human beings. The major challenges to understanding the results of this research are: how precise is the HGP mapping genes, and if mutated genes were an obstacle for scientists to map or did scientists even map mutated genes. The major scientific achievements are in the hope that researchers will able to determine the exact sequence of genes, since everyone has a different string, and potentially tailor such things as medical treatment or nutritional needs to individuals. The people who donated his or her DNA for the HGP were counted as a whole, and not individually. The HGP is still in progress because scientists hope to continue advancing research on the goals they’ve already achieved. Informational link: http://www.pbs.org/faithandreason/intro/genet-body.html
