COVER STORY:
Human Genome Project
June 16, 2000 Episode no. 342
November 7, 2008 Current Stories Election Wrap-Up Sir James Galway God and Empire Religion and America's Role in the World BOB ABERNETHY: Sometime this month, scientists say they will announce that they have mapped almost all the human genome, the inherited instructions that tell our bodies what to do. The promise of the new knowledge is so vast, some researchers speak of a revolution in biomedicine, even disease-free long life. Meanwhile, scientists and ethicists worry about the moral questions the new technology could raise. In today's special report, we look at both the medical promise and the ethical issues of the human genome project.
It's been called the largest and most important project ever in basic scientific research, a 10-year-old international effort to find and map the body's three billion bits of inherited genetic instructions, the human genome.
The project has produced enormous hope for preventing and curing disease. Some say the human life span could be doubled. At the same time, there's intense moral concern about the possible effects. Who should get the new treatments, and could the whole human species be changed?

THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT:
BENEFITING ALL HUMANITY "Later this year, researchers will complete the first draft of the entire human genome, the very blueprint of life. It is important for all our fellow Americans to recognize that federal tax dollars have funded much of this research, and that this and other wise investments in science are leading to a revolution in our ability to detect, treat, and prevent disease." President Clinton

"State of the Union" At today’s Medals of Science and Technology awards ceremony, the President will announce that he and Prime Minister Tony Blair have agreed on a statement of principle to ensure that discoveries from the human genome are used to advance human health. Their joint statement, to be issued in the U.S. and U.K. today, applauds researchers who have made their human genome sequence data freely available to the global scientific community and calls upon others to follow their lead. The statement also acknowledges the importance of intellectual property protection as an incentive for the development of important, new gene-based health care products. ACCESS TO FUNDAMENTAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE HUMAN GENOME WILL IMPROVE HEALTH.

The Human Genome Project
"Science is essentially a cultural activity. It generates pure knowledge about ourselves and about the universe we live in, knowledge that continually reshapes our thinking" [John Sulston] In 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA - the code of instructions for all life on earth... ...in 2003 - just 50 years later - humankind had developed and exploited the technology, the computing capability and the financial and social impetus to record one whole human DNA sequence: some 3 billion letters of genetic code. [Genome Research Limited]
The Human Genome Project: a new reality
In June 1985, as dusk encroached on the second millennium, meetings aimed at outlining the practical task of sequencing the human genome began at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The scientific and technological conditions of the 1980s had become a catalyst for these discussions. DNA cloning and Fred Sanger's sequencing methods, developed in the mid- to late 1970s, were being exploited by scientists who felt that sequencing the human genome seemed possible at an experimental level. Crucially, researchers were, at the same time, beginning to apply computing solutions to genetics and DNA sequencing, developing methods that would make feasible the task of generating and handling genetic data globally.

    Human Genome Project
Human Genome Project, international scientific effort to map all of the genes on the 23 pairs of human chromosomes and, to sequence the 3.1 billion DNA base pairs that make up the chromosomes (see nucleic acid ). Begun in 1990 with the goal of enabling scientists to understand the basis of genetic diseases and to gain insight into human evolution, the project was largely completed in 2000 when 85% of the human genome was decoded, and ended in 2003 with 99% decoded; detailed analyses of all the pairs were published by 2006. In the process, scientists identified genes for cystic fibrosis, neurofibromatosis, Huntington's disease, and an inherited form of breast cancer. In addition, the project decoded the genome of the bacterium E. coli, a fruit fly , and a nematode worm (see phylum Nematoda ), in order to study genetic similarities among species, and a mouse genome was also decoded.

About the UCSC Genome Bioinformatics Site Welcome to the UCSC Genome Browser website. This site contains the reference sequence and working draft assemblies for a large collection of genomes. It also provides portals to the ENCODE and Neandertal projects. We encourage you to explore these sequences with our tools. The Genome Browser zooms and scrolls over chromosomes, showing the work of annotators worldwide. The Gene Sorter shows expression, homology and other information on groups of genes that can be related in many ways. Blat quickly maps your sequence to the genome. The Table Browser provides convenient access to the underlying database. VisiGene lets you browse through a large collection of in situ mouse and frog images to examine expression patterns. Genome Graphs allows you to upload and display genome-wide data sets.
