Light foxing, some soiling, and a split in the cloth along the top edge of the spine where it meets the front panel. A collection of stories about Hagar Stanley, a beautiful gypsy who solves crimes. The author wrote the bestselling The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (the true first edition of which is perhaps the rarest book in the mystery genre) but most of his other 130 books were relatively unsuccessful. This collection is one of only a few of his books which are sought after, mostly for its unique protagonist. Fergus Hume, 1859-1932
Biographical note
Ferguson Wright Hume was born in England. At the age of three his father emigrated with his family to New Zealand. He attended high school in Dunedin and studied law at the University of Otago. Shortly after graduation he left for Melbourne where he obtained a post as a barrister's clerk. After failed attempts to become a playwright, he decided to write a novel instead. Not knowing what to write: "I enquired of a leading Melbourne bookseller what style of book he sold most of He replied that the detective stories of Gaboriau had a large sale; and as, at this time, I had never even heard of this author, I bought all his works — eleven or thereabouts — and read them carefully. The style of these stories attracted me, and I determined to write a book of the same class; containing a mystery, a murder, and a description of low life in Melbourne." The result was The Mystery of a Hansom Cab , which became a great success after he self-published. After the success of his first novel, Hume returned to England. He resided in London for few years and then he moved to the Essex countryside where he lived in Thundersley for thirty years.

Summary
Hume was born in England, but grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand, from the age of three. He studied law at the University of Otago, and left for Australia shortly after graduating in 1885. In Melbourne he worked as a barrister's clerk and attempted writing for the theatre, before turning to popular fiction. His sensational Melbourne detective novel, The Mystery of a Hanson Cab (1886), was initially self-published, but was soon taken up by a London publisher and went on to become an international bestseller. Hume left Australia for England in 1888, where he continued writing stories of mystery and detection, publishing over 100 novels in his lifetime. Those with Australian settings or themes include Madame Midas Miss Mephistopheles (1890) and High Water Mark
