This book is arranged alphabetically by county, and alphabetically by the women who are its subjects. It results from a two year long exploration of the West Country by the author and the photographer, in search of records (for example, memorials, plaques, graves and statues) of women who had links with each area they visited. Visits were made through Avon, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. This index deals only with the women and the names of others who appear in the Devon section of the book. The names of women who were principal subjects of the book appear in italics, with their location. Other names associated with them, and which are not indexed in the book are not italicized. John Murray III's Notes
Prospective to a History of the Quarterly Review
Some time in mid-century, John Murray III, son of the founder of the Quarterly Review and inheritor of the John Murray publishing house, undertook to research a history of his father's journal. The record of his researches takes three forms:
  • in a manuscript, an elaborate and fairly successful attempt to identify authors of Quarterly Review articles is preserved. Following Shine and the Wellesley Index , this manuscript is herein referred to as the Murray Register
letters he gathered of William Gifford, Robert William Hay, John Taylor Coleridge remain in the Murray archive. The letters are cited or quoted from in the Index pages on the Website
summary notes on letters in the Murray archives, chiefly William Gifford correspondence, 1808-1815
It is the latter, his summary of Murray archive letters important to a history of the Quarterly Review , that is transcribed on the following pages. Murray's notes cover the period 1808-15, during which period the first 16 numbers of the journal were published. The transcript on this page covers 1808-1809, up to the publication of the second number of the journal. The balance of Murray's notes will appear here in the next few weeks.

LIBRARY AND EARLY WOMEN'S WRITING
WOMEN WRITERS
Elizabeth Inchbald (1753-1821)
by Elma Scott
Elizabeth Inchbald began her working life as an actress, beautiful and hard-working but of moderate talent. Her fame came from elsewhere: her career as a popular dramatist and as author of two successful novels. She was born on 15 October 1753 to John Simpson and his wife Mary at Standingfield, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, the last child but one in a family of six daughters and two sons. Her father was a farmer and the family was Catholic and respected, comfortable but not affluent. When Simpson died in 1761, his widow carried on with the farm, the family's only source of income. Elizabeth received no formal education, but as she later claimed, 'could spell from infancy'. By 1770, the four older daughters were married and had moved to London. ^ Top The family was accustomed to attending theatres in Bury and Norwich and Elizabeth's brother George became an actor. Elizabeth herself, aged sixteen, applied secretly (and unsuccessfully) for a place in a Norwich theatre company. She endeavoured to overcome a stammer, and found that on stage it was better than in ordinary conversation. During a visit to a married sister in London in 1771, she met the actor Joseph Inchbald, twice her age and the father of two illegitimate sons. On her return home, he began a correspondence with her, but she refused his proposal of marriage, although professing 'the strongest friendship' for him. In April 1772, Elizabeth left home in secret to go to London to find work on the stage, but she was again unsuccessful. In May she met Inchbald again and in June 1772 they were married by Catholic priest, followed by Protestant rites. Joseph Inchbald was an established, though not a great actor, and in September, Elizabeth made her debut in Bristol as Cordelia to her husband's Lear.
